*Terry Crews was on Capitol Hill Tuesday to testify for the Senate Judiciary Committee about his experience with sexual assault.
The “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star got emotional while explaining why he didn’t physically respond when WME talent agent Adam Venit allegedly groped his genitals at a party.
When CA Senator Dianne Feinstein asked Crews why he didn’t physically respond to Venit, Crews said it all came down to the consequences black men in America face every day if they resort to violence.
As reported by TMZ, Crews was one of three people called to testify at a hearing about the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, which provides new rights for victims of sexual violence in the federal criminal code. The committee was reviewing the implementation of that law, which was enacted two years ago.
“Hollywood definitely has been a problem area, simply because so many people view this as a dream. And what happens is, someone has power over these dreams,” Crews said. “And what happens also is that you get tricked into thinking that this type of behavior is expected, that it’s part of the job, that this harassment, abuse, even rape is part of your job description.”
The actor told the Senators he had no plans to speak out about the incident because he doubted law enforcement would take such allegations seriously.
“I probably would have been laughed out of the police station,” Crews said. “A year later, once the #MeToo movement took full swing, it was safe to come out. When you are victimized, you are now behind enemy lines and you are trying to find a way out … You’re trying to find your way to safety. No one around is going to help you. No one is going to believe you.”
The L.A. City Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute Venit because Crews’ allegation had fallen outside of the statute of limitations.
Meanwhile, Crews is refusing to fire back at 50 Cent after the rapper mocked on social media about his sexual assault case.
TMZ caught up withTerry in D.C. Tuesday and asked him how he felt about 50’s Instagram post and the actor took the high road, saying he loves 50 and listens to his music when he works out.
As for the meme 50 Cent posted (see above) — which suggests it’s not possible for Terry to be sexually assaulted because he’s big and muscular — Terry had a direct message for him, explaining why the “Power” star is way off base.
