With a stretch of the imagination, “Ma” could be “Carrie” all grown up had Carrie not toasted her tormentors. “Ma,” the unique horror-thriller revenge story starring Octavia Spencer (Ma, Sue Ann), is a slow burn, just like “Carrie.”
“Ma” takes her time doling out retribution to the offspring of her persecutors. But then the foul-mouthed teenagers also have vices of their own that trigger Sue Ann. However, Sue Ann has some pretty big offenses herself.
One of them being Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA), formerly Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSP). At one point in the film Erica (Juliette Lewis) tells Ma, “What happened to you was wrong, and we should have stopped it.”
Sue Ann is a loner who keeps to herself in a quiet town in Ohio. One day, she is asked by Maggie (Diana Silvers), a new teenager in town to buy some booze for her and her friends. This was like fate knocking at Sue Ann’s basement door.

Directed by Tate Taylor, “Ma” also stars Luke Evans, Missi Pyle, McKaley Miller, Gianni Paolo, Corey Fogelmanis, and Dante Brown.
