Prime Video’s The Expanse Replacement Is Coming To Save Sci-Fi

Years after The Expanse concluded, Prime Video’s replacement for it could save sci-fi TV. The Expanse ended with season 6, concluding the widely praised sci-fi due to low viewership. This was a sad reality for many, given The Expanse‘s status as an all-time best sci-fi show.

To this day, The Expanse often remains near the top of most lists ranking the best sci-fi shows of all time. This proves just how long-lasting the show’s legacy is and how difficult it would be to replace it. However, Prime Video may be doing exactly that with an upcoming sci-fi TV show.

Prime Video’s Stargate Reboot Can Be The Next Great TV Space Opera

In November 2025, a reboot of Stargate was announced by Prime Video. Stargate is one of the more popular sci-fi franchises of recent decades, after behemoths like Star Wars and Star Trek. The original movies and shows in the Stargate franchise have often been well-received, with the concept of a modern reboot holding a great deal of promise.

If Stargate can be rebooted successfully, with strong writing and modern budgets, it could become Prime Video’s next truly great TV space opera. The original projects were known for their dramatic elements, much like The Expanse, which could really be elevated using the Prime Video budgets of 2025. If successful, there is no reason why Stargate cannot replace The Expanse.

There Hasn’t Been A Show Like The Expanse Since The Prime Video Series Ended

The possibility of a new Stargate show raises the reality that there has not been a sci-fi show like The Expanse since its conclusion in 2022. The Expanse was a rare show that knew how to perfectly balance otherworldly sci-fi elements with genuinely compelling human drama, something that the often giant projects of Star Wars seem to forget of late.

In many ways, Stargate can do the same. After all, there are similarities between The Expanse and Stargate. Both shows feature giant gates built by an ancient race of aliens that lead to new planets, as well as political drama over the expansion of humanity beyond the stars.

Despite sci-fi shows failing to replicate what made The Expanse so special, Stargate could provide exactly that. It remains to be seen whether this will be the case, but Stargate can come as close as anything since The Expanse‘s ending. Finally, Prime Video may have found its adequate replacement for the sci-fi epic.
