The ITV historical drama Victoria was canceled before season 4, though that doesn’t mean the series’ return is completely out of the question. The historical drama series Veronica premiered in 2016, and like The Crown and Queen Elizabeth II, Victoria depicts the life of Elizabeth’s great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman), beginning at the start of her reign.
A part of the PBS Masterpiece anthology series in collaboration with ITV, Victoria is a charming, well-crafted, and romantic tale. Each season of Victoria covers a few years of the titular queen’s life, with the first season depicting 1837-1840 and her marriage to Prince Albert (Tom Hughes) and the birth of their first child, Victoria, Princess Royal.
Season two covers the events between 1840 and 1849, most notably the Anglo-Afghan War and the 1840s Famine in Ireland. Season 3 depicts the events between 1849 and 1851, ending with the onset of Albert’s health issues, leaving the season on a cliffhanger, which ended up being left unresolved once the series was canceled.
ITV Said Victoria Season 4 Isn’t Happening (For Now)
Unfortunately for fans of Victoria, ITV canceled the series in July 2021, over two years after season 3 aired (via RadioTimes). However, ITV gave an unusually noncommittal statement about the cancellation, saying,
“There are no plans presently to film Victoria, but that’s not to say we won’t revisit the series with the production team at a later date.”
That’s a very vague statement from a network. These broadcasting companies rarely mince words when it comes to canceling a show; it happens so often. In fact, it gives them an opportunity to create some drama if they ever do announce a show is returning. So, for ITV to hedge its bets about Victoria‘s cancellation is quite unusual.
It would suggest that Victoria is more likely than not to return at some point. In 2025, it’s nearing four years since that announcement with no progress to show, but it still can’t hurt to hope.
Victoria Actress Jenna Coleman On Season 4’s Cancellation
While the star of Victoria, Jenna Coleman, has not commented on the 2021 “official” cancellation, she did admit in 2019 that the show would be taking a hiatus after season 3 (via DigitalSpy),
“It’s definitely going to take a break, bit of a breather and then we’re working out… there’s a lot of conversations, do you start at the Crimean War, or do you start later? I mean there’s too much story, unless I literally did commit until I am 63.”
This “break” ended up taking longer than most people would have hoped. A year later, Coleman reiterated that there was still a lot of story left to tell with Queen Victoria (via Tatler),
“There may be another series… There’s too much of a good story.”
She’s very much right about that; there is a lot of story left in Queen Victoria’s life. She was the longest-reigning monarch in British history until Queen Elizabeth II came along. The issue is that in the intervening years, Coleman’s star has risen quite high.
It may not be easy to tie her down for another season of a historical drama show. As she hasn’t recently commented, it can be hard to know Coleman’s feelings about the project as we get further away from it.
What Jenna Coleman & The Victoria Cast Have Done Since The Show Ended
The cast of Victoria has not slowed down despite their show ending. Jenna Coleman has been working nonstop, starring in Wilderness, The Jetty, and The Serpent. She’s also starred in three movies since Victoria, including Jackdaw and All of You, and she’s set to star in the upcoming Control.
Peter Bowles appeared in Off the Rails in 2021. Anna Wilson-Jones has a recurring role in Bridgerton. Rufus Sewell stars in The Diplomat. Tom Hughes starred in the 2024 series Those About to Die and appeared in Malpractice and Gold. He’s also claimed he would return for Victoria (via Collider),
“I’ve always have my eye on the end result because, as far as I’m concerned, even if we only made one season, I need to portray that part of the man’s whole existence. So, yeah, if there’s an appetite, then it would be really nice to finish the story.”
So if Victoria season 4 does become a reality, it sounds like the two most important actors would be willing to return.
Victoria Has Found New Life On Netflix – Could It Help Season 4’s Chances?
All 3 seasons of Victoria were made available on Netflix in December 2025, and the series could find a new set of viewers over the winter holidays. Like The Crown, there’s a coziness to Victoria that makes it a perfect binge-watch when it starts getting cold, even with the serious subject matter.
Loyal fans of the show might hope that Victoria’s introduction to a Netflix audience may spike popularity and lead to the show’s renewal. While it’s not a common occurrence, shows like Arrested Development and Lucifer were given extra seasons by Netflix.
That’s fairly rare, though, and both shows were special circumstances. More unfavorable is the recent announcement that Netflix plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for a tidy sum of $82.7 billion. Even if they had the funds after the acquisition for Victoria, buying their library rather than making it seems to be Netflix’s game plan.
