Since its 2018 debut in Weekly Shōnen Jump, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man has consistently been one of the most shocking, bizarre, outlandish, yet entirely heartfelt ongoing stories in anime and manga. One chapter or episode can cause overwhelming confusion or laughter, and the next will have fans breaking down into tears.

The conclusion to the manga’s first part, which may or may not be included in the anime’s upcoming second season, cemented the fact that no other manga is willing to get as weird as Chainsaw Man. Fans connected it to an infamous real-life story once told by creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, and it seems the series’ most recent fight is calling back to that story yet again.

Chainsaw Man’s Most Recent Battle Calls Back to a Strange Story About Its Author

Denji Has Eaten Yoru’s Best Buddy, the Moray Eel Devil

Chainsaw Man fights have never been ordinary, and now that Yoru has powered up beyond comprehension, the series has begun to lean into just how absurd its power system and characters’ abilities truly are. Denji, with full command of Pochita’s erasure powers, is currently eating Yoru’s allies and erasing them from history, in an attempt to convince the War Devil to give Asa’s body back.

After the conclusion of Part One, in which he cooked and ate Makima in order to defeat her, nothing should be surprising to Chainsaw Man fans, and it seems the ‘victory by eating your opponent’ theme is sticking around.

A short while after Part One’s conclusion, in a printed collection of one-shots, Tatsuki Fujimoto told a strange story about a time his pet Japanese rice fish died, and his then-girlfriend asked him to bury the fish. After failing to dig a hole and feeling a connection to the fish for the first time, he opted instead to eat it. Fans went on to draw connections between that story and Denji eating Makima.

Now, in targeting the one she truly had a soft spot for, Denji ate and erased the Moray Eel Devil in Chainsaw Man chapter #223, “Ultimate Armor”. This time around, the reference to Fujimoto’s odd rice fish story is a bit clearer. Yoru’s affection for the Moray Eel Devil hasn’t been explained and likely won’t be, though it could be a similar affection Fujimoto held for his fish before eating it.

Chainsaw Man Part Two Is Currently in Its Weirdest, Most Exciting Fight Yet

Denji, in his new and sleek Denji Man form, seems intent on pushing Yoru’s buttons, and it appears she’s on the verge of forfeit. Their long-awaited battle has been one of Chainsaw Man‘s wackiest to date, yet when characters become as absurdly powerful as the two of them currently are, a normal fight simply wouldn’t work.

Chainsaw Man is known for being weird, and the next time fans watch the Screen Award-winning Reze Arc film, they can think about what’s currently happening in the manga, and the time its creator ate his pet fish. The battle between Denji and Yoru appears to be reaching its climax, and fans won’t want to miss its exciting, potentially eating-centric end.
