Disney’s Tangled Has Resurgence On Streaming Amid Reboot Announcements

The modern Disney classic Tangled has a resurgence on streaming. Released in 2010, Tangled is the spirited adaptation of a staple fairy tale Disney had yet to put its own spin on, that of Rapunzel. Disney’s movie finds the titular character as a restless young woman anxious to escape her tower and see the world, who bargains with a kind-hearted thief to have him escort her to an annual spectacle.

Tangled‘s voice cast is led by Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, and Donna Murphy. It is to date the most expensive animated Disney movie ever made, but was still a success when it grossed nearly $600 million worldwide upon its release and went on to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. And as of today, 16 years later, Tangled is the No. 8 movie in the world on Disney+, per FlixPatrol.

One of Disney’s biggest sci-fi flops is still at No. 1 on streaming, that being 2025’s Tron: Ares, the third installment and second legacy sequel in the Tron franchise. Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Zootopia occupy the second, third, and fifth spots with their sequels in theaters. 2025 hits The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Freakier Friday also rank just above Tangled at this time.

Tangled falls above regular Disney+ favorite Ratatouille on the streaming charts on January 12, as well as Avengers: Endgame. Tangled‘s resurgence among the top movies on streaming is happening amid and likely because of announcements about its upcoming live-action remake. The remake project was shelved after 2025’s Snow White‘s losses, but reentered development after Lilo & Stitch‘s success.

About a week ago, Disney announced Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, respectively, in the new Tangled, while Kathryn Hahn is in talks to play the villain Gothel. With production yet to begin, Tangled could hit theaters again in 2027, and following Lilo & Stitch‘s billion-dollar gross, it stands to be a massive hit, as another remake of a 21st-century Disney animated original.

Tangled was also such a hit in its time as to spawn some under-the-radar follow-ups, the TV series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure and TV movie Tangled: Before Ever After, which both brought back Moore and Levi with musical theater star Eden Espinosa joining them as part of the cast. The flagship Tangled, however, remains its own widely acclaimed standalone adventure.

At the moment, Tangled is a more modest streaming success, not overtaking the movies on Disney+’s streaming charts that are clearly having a moment while their franchises release new installments. But Tangled could become the No. 1 movie again with the advent of its remake, and its streaming status right now suggests people are becoming mildly interested in the story’s future.
