Ranbir Kapoor’s filmography explores stories of the heart in many ways. As an artiste, Ranbir has embodied multiple characters that bring layers of tenderness, vulnerability, longing, heartbreak, and love to life. Casual, transformative, calm, or tragic, he has portrayed all forms of love that still resonate deep with the audience.

And perhaps that is why Ranbir finds love and art to be deeply intertwined.

Talking candidly to Filmfare, Ranbir once drew a stunning analogy between an artiste and a lover. For him, emotional honesty occupies a profound space in a relationship. Love isn’t just about accepting your partner’s perceptions; it is also about revealing different ways of seeing and feeling.

Emphasizing this thought, Ranbir says, “The role of an artiste is exactly like the lover. If I love you, I have to make you conscious of all the things that I want you to see, and you can’t see. And if I can do that through my characters, through my films, through these different subjects that I’m trying to do, of course I’ll fail, you know, I’ll go wrong because I don’t have a formula for it. But I am going to show you something that you didn’t know you wanted to see. If I know that this is what you want to see and I keep doing that, I will falter. It’s something that I don’t think I will be good at. That’s the idea. That’s the endeavor.”

In this view, gently expanding your partner’s emotional horizons to reveal hidden and unknown thoughts and feelings becomes a shared responsibility.

It is no surprise that Ranbir has also been a compelling face of one of Bollywood’s intensely explored themes – unrequited love AKA “Ek Tarfa Pyaar”. The internet still romanticizes those “Ranbir walking away while Kabira plays in the background” segments very dearly. It has become a symbol of heartbreak and moving on.

Time and gain, Ranbir’s characters have loved deeply even when it is not reciprocated. In many of his films complex and unrequited love takes the center stage. As Raj, he falls in love with Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) in Sawaariya, who continues to wait for her long-lost lover Imaan (Salman Khan). In Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Prem (Ranbir Kapoor) does everything possible to unite Jenny (Katrina Kaif) with another man burying his own feelings. In Anjaana Anajaani he quietly steps back on finding out Kiara’s (Priyanka Chopra) feelings for her ex. In Rockstar, Jordan believes heartbreak fuels art, only to find real love in Heer that ultimately consumes him. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil brings one of his most defining portrayals of one-sided love when Ayan’s longing for Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) remains unfulfilled when she does not feel the same.

So, love has rarely been a smooth sail when it comes to Ranbir’s cinematic universe. It is messy and painful but always sincere. Interestingly, while on-screen romances have faced complexities, Ranbir says real life has been different. “Unrequited love is all about loving someone dearly and not being loved back. Fortunately, I’ve not been in that situation. I’m a loving person. I’d like to believe I’m a swell guy, so people would love me back,” he said.

He acknowledged having a fair share of heartbreak. And candidly recalled, “Yes, a man was once in love with me. Obviously, I wasn’t because that’s not my sexuality.”

Despite portraying some of the most emotionally wrecked and one-sided lovers, he adds “It’s never been one-sided with a woman.” (in real life).
