Apple TV’s New Horror Comedy Series With Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Already One Of Its Best

Apple TV‘s new horror comedy series just earned a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and is already one of the streamer’s best new shows of 2026. Starring Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, the star of all-time classic series like The Americans and recent streaming smash hits like Netflix’s The Beast in Me, this 10-part genre-blending Apple TV gem is currently the #2 most-watched show on the platform, trailing only Jon Hamm’s Your Friends & Neighbors in the United States.

Set within the small-town coastal charm of a fictional New England island, this new critically acclaimed Apple TV series pulls viewers in from its very first scene, introducing Rhys’ bumbling protagonist Tom Loftis, the mayor of the titular community known as Widow’s Bay. The series opens up like any ordinary comedy/drama, featuring elements of workplace humor similar to Parks & Recreation and tight-knit local drama as seen in Mare of Easttown. However, after an eerie fog rolls into the community, startling Tom as he tries to impress a New York Times reporter, it becomes clear that this seemingly idyllic town has a history of strange and inexplicable happenings.

Widow’s Bay Is Already One Of Apple TV’s Best New Shows

With its near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, combined with an equally impressive audience score of 93%, Widow’s Bay has already affirmed itself as one of Apple TV’s best shows of 2026, with the potential to be one of the streamer’s all-time greats. Rhys once again demonstrates exactly why he’s one of the most sought-after and exceptional leading actors in television, carrying the bulk of the story on his shoulders through the first two episodes. He’s supported by Stephen Root, Tim Baltz, Kate O’Flynn, and more.

Compared to other newly released Apple TV series this year, which include Imperfect Women and Hijack season 2, Widow’s Bay is among the most celebrated straight out of the gate following its 2-part premiere on Wednesday, April 29. If its viewership momentum expands as the rest of its eight episodes are released between now and mid-June, it will be difficult to imagine Apple TV not being renewed for a second, and perhaps third, season, based on its immediate and universal praise. More than anything, Widow’s Bay proves to be the latest example of Matthew Rhys’ hot streak starring in TV and streaming series.

Widow’s Bay Innovatively Blends Comedy With Folk Horror

What sets Widow’s Bay apart from most modern streaming series is its unique and astute ability to not only blend horror and comedy genres, which appear to exist at opposite ends of the content spectrum, but to overlap them in thrilling and satisfying ways. At a split second, the tone can suddenly shift from light-hearted comedy to suspenseful drama and full-blown horror, which is a testament to the thoughtful craftsmanship of series creator Katie Dippold and the writing staff.

Many viewers and critics have instantly compared Widow’s Bay to Stephen King’s wide body of work, a comparison that will become apparent to viewers after watching the first two episodes. Widow’s Bay certainly has horror elements with supernatural themes and sudden jump scares, but it never loses its core identity as a comedy/drama series that is deeply focused on the mystery within the coastal town. As the mayor, Tom is tasked with keeping up appearances to make Widow’s Bay a desirable tourist destination. That said, the lingering paranormal activity is the one thing that’s holding the town back and frightening the locals all at once.

Netflix’s Biggest Shows This Weekend (May 1–3) Are Already Dominating – Here’s What To Watch

The biggest hit shows on Netflix right now are already dominating global streaming charts heading into the first weekend of May 2026 – watch them now.

Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of horror series, Widow’s Bay is worth watching on Apple TV because of how effective it is in creating suspense and maintaining tension. The most horrific moments of its first two episodes are on a similar level to Stranger Things, in which scenes can become quite graphic and unsettling, but the series always returns to the more comfortable elements and characters that make the show enjoyable. If you’re looking for something new to dive into tonight, Widow’s Bay on Apple TV is about as good as it gets.
