Project Hail Mary zooms through one major box office record.

Ryan Gosling’s new sci-fi epic has taken the world by storm after winning the hearts of critics and audiences alike. That word-of-mouth helped the movie reach a remarkable $80 million opening weekend, quickly making it one of the year’s biggest movies and Amazon MGM Studio’s best film debut to date. Despite competition from new releases, Project Hail Mary‘s momentum hasn’t slowed down, as it continues to hit key milestones in less than two months.

Now, Deadline reports that Project Hail Mary has made $638.4 million at the global box office. That’s enough to officially become the highest-grossing movie adaptation of Andy Weir’s work, overtaking Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which made $630 million. The sci-fi epic accomplished this feat in its seventh weekend in theaters, as $16 million was added to its total, which includes $8.6M domestically.

Weir’s latest adaptation continues to set box office achievements despite being in theaters for two months. Less than a month ago, Project Hail Mary had already surpassed The Martian‘s domestic total of $228 million. Last week, it also set the rare feat as only the fifth non-franchise, non-superhero sci-fi movie to pass the $300 million milestone in North America.

    Domestic Box Office

    Global Box Office

    The Martian (2015)

    $228,433,663

    $630,621,406

    Project Hail Mary (2026)

    $318,342,784

    $638,442,784

Although Amazon typically has a 45-day window exclusive to theaters, Project Hail Mary already exceeded that due to its box office success. Co-director Christopher Miller confirmed last month that the theatrical run was extended, saying that “This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen” and “It’s an experience to share with others.” With the summer movie schedule just starting, however, it’s unclear how much longer it will remain in theaters and when Project Hail Mary will hit streaming on Prime Video.

The high engagement can be credited to the movie’s incredible reception with critics and audiences. Reviews of Project Hail Mary were extremely positive, with praise towards Gosling’s versatile performance, the heartwarming story of an alien friendship, and the beautiful spatial visuals. Additionally, the sci-fi movie strikes the right balance of smarts and hearts as Ryland Grace attempts to save Earth with the help of Rocky. As of writing, Project Hail Mary has a strong 94% critics’ rating and 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As the box office continues to grow, there have been conversations about its award potential. Many film pundits and critics predict that Project Hail Mary is already one of the earliest contenders for the upcoming season, especially given its technical accomplishments. It was also revealed that Rocky puppeteer and stage performer James Ortiz is eligible for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards, after his performance of the rock-like alien became a standout.

Additionally, the future looks bright for Project Hail Mary. Although Weir does not have a sequel to the book, the acclaimed author told ScreenRant in March that he’s “got bits and pieces of good ideas for sequels, but not enough to run with. If I’m going to sequel it, I want it to be good.” While Project Hail Mary‘s box office success helps its chances for a follow-up, Amazon has yet to announce any development.

The Martian and Project Hail Mary are the only Weir stories that have been fully adapted into a feature. However, Miller and Phil Lord are still involved with Artemis, which has been in development since 2017. In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, Lord addressed the near-decade delay, attributing it to “the trick on that was the moon gravity, which is 1/6th Earth’s gravity. It is a really tricky thing to shoot in a practical way.”

Project Hail Mary is now playing in theaters.
