Kiara Advani spoke at length about motherhood and postpartum depression in a recent podcast. The actress welcomed her firstborn, Saraayah, with her husband Sidharth Malhotra last year in July. During her interview, she shared that motherhood is an identity shift and also revealed that her girl gang helped her sail through the post-partum phase.
“Nobody talks about postpartum, and it should be spoken about more… It (motherhood) is such an identity shift. It is such a new world, and in that moment, it is difficult for the woman going through it to give herself grace. It takes time. It has taken me six months… In the past six months, I have just told myself: Just give yourself grace. Because you are doing so much for everyone else that you forget about the relationship that you need to have with yourself. The things you need to tell yourself. For me, my whole life, I have been so other-centric that what’s changed since my baby was born is that I finally found time to nurture that relationship that I need to have with myself. And it is probably the best thing that I have done for myself. After 34 years, I have learnt to set boundaries. I have learnt not to do critical conversations with myself, because sometimes you are over-critical about everything that you are doing. I have learnt not to focus on fear. I had to teach myself all of these things in these six months,” Kiara said during Raj Shamani’s podcast.

She also broke down during the conversation.

The actress continued, “I just feel like if someone else is watching this, they are not alone in this journey, and I feel, I will make this a rather emotional moment, and I feel what helped me go through and sail through these 6 months was my girl gang. It is that one group of people who know what you are going through. It’s like you feel so seen, heard and understood there.”
In the same conversation, she also praised Sidharth for being a hands-on father. Talking about her early postpartum days, she continued, “Us waqt, I don’t know if it was just me missing him in my life at that point or what, but I was going through… everything was triggering me. Anything matlab, you could say something which today we laugh about, but at that point during those first few days, anything could just… pat pat pat pat pat… mere aansu nikal jaate.”
