Netflix’s Global Smash Hit Zombie Thriller Has Officially Made K-Drama History

Netflix K-dramas have been changing the game for years, and the platform’s best zombie horror series is no different. Korean dramas have always been international hits, but the genre’s popularity is at an all-time high, propagated by bands like BTS, films like KPop Demon Hunters, and television series like Squid Game. Unsurprisingly, Netflix rushed to capitalize on the rapidly-growing phenomenon, and the streaming service now releases original Korean dramas each year. While most are one-season miniseries that tell a comprehensive, self-contained story, however, some K-dramas in the streaming age have grown popular enough to earn a rare follow-up season.

Such is the case with All of Us Are Dead, a breakout hit from 2022 that helped revitalize the zombie horror genre at large. Based on an acclaimed webtoon, the coming-of-age thriller follows a group of teenagers who find themselves trapped at school while a mysterious virus spreads, turning their classmates into bloodthirsty monsters. The season 1 finale seemed to wrap up All of Us Are Dead‘s dangerous outbreak, but there were obvious storylines left unresolved for the highly-anticipated sophomore showing. Yet, as exciting as All of Us Are Dead season 2 is, the wait has been torture.

The Acclaimed Series Has Been Stuck In Production Limbo For Years

Following its 2022 premiere, All of Us Are Dead quickly became an instant classic. The terrifying K-drama captivated millions of viewers during its opening week, and its prominence only rose from there. Consequently, it came as no surprise when, on June 6, 2022— just over four months after its debut— All of Us Are Dead was officially renewed for a second season. Both devotees of the source material and the countless new fans of the series rejoiced at the news, but nobody could have predicted how many obstacles would arise and delay production.

Principal photography didn’t even begin until July 2025, over three years after season 2’s announcement. Nevertheless, viewers were eager to see the long-awaited continuation of the story, and many assumed the post-production would conclude in time for All of Us Are Dead to appear on Netflix’s 2026 K-drama roster. Sadly, the zombie drama was notably absent from the list, meaning All of Us Are Dead season 2’s release date will be sometime in 2027 at the earliest.

A five-year hiatus between seasons is a massive wait for any series, but the K-drama industry is renowned for its quick turnarounds. Typically, new dramas release the year after they film, and sequels rarely take longer. Some series, like Gyeongseong Creature and Alchemy of Souls, have released two seasons in the same calendar year due to pre-filming, but even Squid Game, a totally unexpected success, only took three years to return. In comparison, All of Us Are Dead fans have waited nearly half a decade for season 2, which is unheard of for Netflix original K-dramas.

Netflix’s Iconic Horror Series Is Poised For A Petrifying Return

Nevertheless, the extra time production has taken will surely be reflected in the new season, be it in the form of spine-chilling special effects or perfectly-paced episodes. Based on what has already been set up in the first season and teased during the hiatus, All of Us Are Dead season 2 could be even better than its smash-hit first installment. For instance, there are lingering mysteries regarding its overarching lore, including the existence of “halfbies” (half-zombie, half-human hybrids) that have ostensibly roamed the earth in secret since the season 1 finale.

    10 Must-Watch K-Dramas For Every Horror Fan

Many viewers may assume all K-dramas are lighthearted romantic comedies, but the genre is full of chills and thrills to impress any horror fan.

Furthermore, the open world of Seoul will be a refreshing change of pace from the claustrophobic, stationary setting of season 1’s quarantined academy. Similarly, returning characters will each have carefully-crafted arcs that reflect how they’ve developed as people since the first outbreak ended. In that sense, the time it’s taken to create All of Us Are Dead might just pay off, though the jury is still out on whether it will truly be worth the historic wait.
