The road to release for Dhruva Natchathiram has rarely been straightforward, and the long-awaited film has now encountered yet another legal obstacle. Days after a significant court victory appeared to revive hopes for the film’s theatrical release, fresh applications filed before the Madras High Court have once again brought the Vikram-starrer under judicial scrutiny. On Tuesday, Justice K Kumaresh Babu directed that all new pleas related to the project be placed before Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, who had earlier passed the April 30 order that paved the way for the film’s release.
Investors Seek Safeguards Before Release
Among the fresh applications is a plea filed by filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon, who has reportedly sought time until July 15, 2026, to release the film. The request arrives after months of legal proceedings aimed at resolving disputes surrounding the project’s finances and outstanding liabilities. At the same time, investors K Punniyamoorthy and K Premkumar have approached the court seeking modifications to the April 30 order. According to their plea, an amount of ₹10.22 crore allegedly owed to them should be secured before the film is permitted to reach theatres.
The investors have also questioned certain financial details submitted in court by the filmmaker. In a separate application, they requested that court-appointed observers be allowed to engage an independent auditor to examine the list of creditors associated with the film. Their contention is that the dues claimed should be thoroughly verified to establish whether they are genuinely linked to Dhruva Natchathiram.
Court Refers Matter Back To Judge Who Passed Original Order
During Tuesday’s proceedings, Justice Kumaresh Babu observed that since the investors were seeking changes to an order already passed by Justice Ramamoorthy, the matter would be more appropriately heard by the same judge. Consequently, all three applications were referred back to Justice Ramamoorthy for consideration.
The matter is now scheduled to come up for hearing on June 24, with industry observers closely watching the outcome. The hearing could prove significant in determining whether the film’s latest release plans remain on track or face further delays. The fresh legal proceedings come shortly after a Division Bench of the Madras High Court dismissed appeals filed by the investors against the earlier order. That ruling had been widely seen as a major breakthrough for the film, raising expectations that one of Tamil cinema’s most delayed projects might finally make its way to theatres.
Announced in 2016, Dhruva Natchathiram was conceived as an ambitious spy thriller and marked one of Gautham Vasudev Menon’s most expensive productions. The film stars Vikram as John, the leader of a covert operations unit known as The Basement, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ritu Varma, Aishwarya Rajesh, Simran, R Parthiban, Radhika Sarathkumar, Vinayakan and Divyadarshini. Music for the project has been composed by Harris Jayaraj. Over the years, teasers and promotional material generated considerable excitement among fans, with many viewing the film as one of the most anticipated unreleased titles in Tamil cinema.
However, repeated financial challenges, creditor disputes, and legal battles have kept the project from reaching audiences despite several announced release dates. The latest proceedings add another chapter to a saga that has stretched nearly a decade. For fans who have patiently waited through years of uncertainty, the June 24 hearing could offer fresh clarity on whether Dhruva Natchathiram is finally nearing the finish line or preparing for yet another delay.
