Pluribus Season 2 Return Gets Disappointing New Update From Rhea Seehorn

A new update has arrived for Pluribus season 2.

Created by Vince Gilligan, the Apple TV sci-fi show premiered on November 7 of last year, introducing audiences to Rhea Seehorn’s Carol, who must save humanity after a mysterious extraterrestrial hive mind takes over Earth. Season 1 was a hit with audiences, leading to confirmation that Pluribus season 2 is in the works.

During a recent conversation on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Seehorn reveals that, despite the show’s renewal last year, she still has no idea when Pluribus season 2 filming may actually take place. “We don’t know,” she says when asked about a start date for production.

Seehorn then reveals that filming for season 1 wrapped in December 2024, followed by several weeks of additional photography for the show’s ski resort sequences. The series then went into post-production until its November premiere in 2025. Seehorn stresses that she doesn’t have any inside information about season 2 in terms of episode count or Carol’s story, but answers with an enthusiastic “Yeah” when asked if she’s ready to return.

Seehorn does offer some insight into the writer’s room process, though, echoing earlier comments from Gilligan about plans for the show’s future. Though there may have been a vision in place for where the story would go from here, a lot of that changed as they unpacked it in the writers’ room. Seehorn explains:

“He said this publicly at South by South West or somewhere where I was with him that they went back to the writers’ room with all these thoughts. They were thinking like, ‘I think this [will happen] and then that. And then this will wrap up this way.’ And then they got there and started doing what they call kicking the tires on all of it, and they basically just wanted to go back to square one. But I mean I think that’s why these shows are so rewarding. He would even say he wishes he could get it back on sooner.”

Regarding the timeline to get the show back on the air, Seehorn reveals that Gilligan is feeling the pressure. “He does feel rushed. This is him working his ass off,” she says.

With no filming date in sight, audiences are seemingly in for quite a long wait following the Pluribus season 1 ending. Season 1 filming started in February 2024 and went for about 11 months, followed by another 10 months or so of post-production. It seems unlikely, then, if season 2 follows this timeline, that the show will return before 2028 or 2029 given its current status.

This kind of wait between seasons isn’t necessarily unusual these days. Shows have become bigger and more expensive to make, and there’s often more VFX work needed, which takes time. Evidently, the long process of making Pluribus season 1 paid off, as the show earned strong reviews and was a viewership hit.

Such a long wait, though, is also sure to be frustrating to viewers. A common sentiment expressed online when a show takes a long time to return is that people forget what happened in the previous season and have lost a sense of investment in the narrative. These kinds of complaints were less common when a show returned for a new season like clockwork each year.

With a writers’ room currently underway, progress is clearly being made on Pluribus season 2 behind the scenes. Once a filming date has been set, the show’s potential return date will become far more clear.
