In an era in which video games are becoming increasingly expensive and budgets are even tighter, it is always refreshing when a massive, all-consuming, time-sink RPG is added to PlayStation for free. There have been quite a few, especially after the likes of Genshin Impact popularized the free-to-play open-world RPG genre, and they show no sign of slowing down any time soon. Of course, that doesn’t mean they come at a rapid pace, and so it is important to pay attention when one is eventually released.

Fortunately, joining the ranks of some of the best free RPGs on PlayStation are two brand-new entries. Neither game requires PlayStation Plus to be played, and neither costs a cent to access. These are completely free, absolutely massive, and potentially engrossing RPGs that are available to download right now. All you need is a PlayStation, a controller, and a few hours to download these behemoth video games, and you’ll be playing these free RPGs in no time.

Mistfall Hunter and Once Human have both launched their beta on PlayStation for free. The former is a PvPvE fantasy extraction action RPG from debut studio Bellring Games that looks like a mix between Lords of the Fallen, Dark Souls, and Arc Raiders. It promises a dark and gritty world full of deadly foes to kill and plenty of enticing loot to extract. It may be launching amidst a rather busy period for the extraction genre, but Mistfall Hunter aims to deliver something a little different with its fantasy setting and focus on melee combat.

The latter, Once Human, is the critically acclaimed open-world online survival game developed by Starry Studio. It was released all the way back in 2024, after which Once Human garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike. While there were some minor teething issues, the game still consistently gets positive feedback from users, especially on Steam, where it sits on a Mostly Positive rating. Once Human is a survival third-person shooter experience set in a surreal apocalyptic world and features base building, PvP, a mysterious narrative, and brutal combat.

Mistfall Hunter’s beta period will end on July 29, 2026, when it is expected to get a full release. Once Human’s PS5 release date is still unknown at this time, but it is expected to be in 2026. Regardless, when both games do fully launch, they will continue to be completely free and won’t require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play. This is perfect news for those who are looking for the next best multiplayer PlayStation game to play with friends or alone, but without needing to spend anything to access them.

A demo for Mistfall Hunter was made available during Steam Next Fest, and Once Human, as aforementioned, has been out since 2024; so, both games have received plenty of feedback, which is ideal for those who prefer to watch reviews first, even for completely free titles. The betas are currently available to download via the official PlayStation store for those who are interested. At the very least, both games should make for a fun few hours with friends on PlayStation.
