Fresh off a European tour, The Pretty Reckless returned to New York City on Thursday night for an intimate record release party celebrating the band’s new studio album, Dear God. Held inside the Church of the Ascension in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the venue proved to be an ideal setting, not only because of its size, but because the church itself naturally complemented the album’s title and atmosphere.

Instead of unveiling the record with a full production show, the band opted for an acoustic performance featuring Taylor Momsen on vocals, Ben Phillips on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, and touring member Logan Nikolic on guitar. With the arrangement stripped back, the focus stayed on the songs, the vocals, and the chemistry between the three musicians.

The evening never felt like a typical album launch. There were no oversized visuals or elaborate stage production. Instead, it unfolded like an honest conversation between the band and a room full of fans. Momsen shared stories between songs, Phillips joined in with casual banter, and the atmosphere remained relaxed from beginning to end. At times, it felt less like watching a performance and more like catching a glimpse of a band running through songs backstage or on a tour bus before walking onstage. That sense of authenticity became one of the night’s defining moments.

The setlist balanced longtime favorites with new material from Dear God. Songs included “Going to Hell,” “Make Me Wanna Die,” “Harley Darling,” “When I Wake Up,” “For I Am Death” (performed twice due to a technical glitch the first time), and a cover of “What’s So Funny ’Bout Peace, Love and Understanding.” An encore added the Dear God songs “Love Me” and “About You.”

The experience extended well beyond the music. In addition to a first-listen of the album, guests were welcomed with custom pizza boxes from Joe’s Pizza featuring Dear God artwork printed directly on the lids, branded tote bags filled with exclusive merchandise and promotional items, and a candy bar stocked with some of Momsen’s favorite treats. During the evening, the singer shared that while she doesn’t eat before taking the stage, she almost always has a piece of candy. A vintage style candy cigarette girl also wandered through the venue handing out sweets, adding another detail that fit the relaxed feel of the night.

With fewer than 100 people inside the church, there was little separation between the band and the audience. Conversations felt natural, the performances never felt overrehearsed, and every interaction came across as genuine. It wasn’t trying to be an exclusive event for the sake of exclusivity. It simply allowed those in attendance to experience The Pretty Reckless in a way that few fans ever will.
