With several huge Middle-earth projects on the way in the coming months, it’s never been a more exciting time to be a Lord of the Rings fan. Despite mixed reactions among longtime Tolkien enthusiasts, Amazon’s The Rings of Power continues to expand the Second Age with a new season this November, while Andy Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum is set for release in December 2027.

For many fans, though, the most exciting project has come from the recent announcement from Warhorse Studios, the acclaimed developer behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, who officially confirmed they’re working on an open-world LOTR RPG that could finally give us the massive adventure in Middle-earth we’ve been waiting on for years. However, without any major details on the project so far, fans could be waiting for some time before they get their hands on anything substantial from Warhorse.

Luckily, The Lord of the Rings is officially returning this July with another highly anticipated adventure back through Middle-earth, as LOTR: Ascension is expected to drop in the coming weeks (via Gamefound).

The Lord of the Rings: Ascension is a new tabletop deck-building game from Stone Blade Entertainment that brings J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy universe into the long-running Ascension card game series. According to Gamefound, the new LOTR deck-builder is slated for launch on July 14th at 1:00 PM EST.

Designed for one to four players, the game reimagines the core mechanics of Ascension around Middle-earth, allowing players to recruit legendary heroes, gather powerful artifacts, battle infamous villains, and ultimately shape the fate of the War of the Ring through strategic deck-building.

The Lord of the Rings: Ascension is split into three interconnected sets inspired by The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Each set functions as a standalone experience but can also be combined into a larger campaign spanning the entire trilogy.

The game introduces mechanics created specifically for Tolkien’s world, including resisting the corrupting influence of the One Ring, assembling the Fellowship for powerful team-based bonuses, and earning Honor by defeating iconic enemies before eventually confronting Sauron.

Stone Blade has also emphasized that The Lord of the Rings: Ascension isn’t simply a movie adaptation, and while recognizable characters such as Gandalf, Legolas, Gollum, and other Fellowship members are present, the game also draws heavily from Tolkien’s original novels. Every card also features newly commissioned artwork created specifically for this release, and it’s most definitely going to be a hit among fans of deck-building games, Ascension, hardcore Lord of the Rings collectors, and Tolkien fans in general.
