Every once a while a new obsession brews up on social media. One that the internet cannot stop passionately raving about. It could be a song, a painting, a movie, a dish or even a cat. Algorithms flood with its montages, memes and reaction videos. Sooner than you know it takes over all your feed making you ultimately engage with it. And that is the cyclical nature of pop culture.

After Off Campus recently took charge, we have yet another fixation doing the rounds. And it is (drumroll please) Voicemails for Isabelle.

The film, starring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson follows the story of Jill, an aspiring chef, grieving the death of the love of her life – her sister Issy and Wes, a rich and commitment phobic real estate guy. As the relationship between sisters goes, Jill finds herself sharing every single update about her messy and chaotic life with her sister over voicemails to Issy’s old number. However, the phone number now belongs to Wes, who religiously listens to the horrors of her dating and professional life in San Fransico and unexpectedly falls for her. When they meet, Jill thinks of it as a chance encounter. Only Wes knows there’s more to it.

The film is a beautiful take on love, loss, companionship and all the odd ways we find to hold onto the memories of someone we dearly miss. Although there are conversations about media literacy around the film with some highlighting the concerns over privacy, it is interesting to know that the majority of the internet has taken the movie as just a feel – good fictional piece worth enjoying on a late weekend night.

I watched the film as it poured outside, sobbing in a company of popcorns and tissues. Here are all the thoughts that crossed my mind.

    Shah Rukh Khan

How cute are these little sisters.

Their little dance routine is beyond adorable.

I want to partake in Robyn dance routines too.

    Is Issy going to die?

Love and grief is a deadly combo.

The denial on Jill’s face on knowing Issy didn’t make it is a hard punch in the gut.

Watch this movie at your own risk if you have a little sister.

Leah is actually the writer and director of the movie!

She gets to tell her protagonist to run to get his girl. Stars do align!

Men written by women are superior. Period.

Yep! Jill doesn’t need a man to make herself feel better Wes.

Wish I could throw Kumquats at the chef’s face.

You are God’s favourite child if you have a little sister.

Her food filled cheeks look like a sexy chipmunk to him!! Why am I smiling?

Love is supposed to be fun.

We all deserve someone who loves us “in a very uncool, desperate, all-consuming kind of way”

Life has to feel hilarious even when we’re grieving.

This movie feels like a modern day You’ve Got Mail.

So what if he’s crying to Taylor Swift? That’s a reasonable reaction.

Of course, Wes restored the voicemails.

Nonchalant? What’s that? We have Nick Robinson drenched in rain, running to see Zoey. We’re back to basics baby!

Love is supposed to make you feel like “pink and purple fireworks” do.

OMG! Is that Issy doing the dance routine behind Jill?

Never getting over Wes sending Issy a voicemail to ask for her permission before moving in with Jill.

    He’s a bird!
