Injustice 3 Has DC Fans Seriously Hyped, And We See Why

Ask any NetherRealm fan and they’ll probably tell you the same thing: Injustice 3 being released isn’t an ‘if,’ it’s a ‘when.’ There’s been no official confirmation one way or another, whether there are plans for a third installment of Injustice or not, but it seems highly unlikely that there’d be a reality where NetherRealm has completely abandoned its DC fighting game franchise to work exclusively on Mortal Kombat games for the foreseeable future.

Therefore, every tiny and seemingly insignificant morsel of an Injustice breadcrumb will suddenly catch fans’ attention until something official and substantial either lifts or lowers their spirits. It doesn’t necessarily help, then, that fans believe NetherRealm’s Ed Boon is stoking those flames on social media right now.

On Twitter/X, Boon—Mortal Kombat’s co-creator and Injustice director—has been posting a series of poll threads in order to gauge which Injustice 1 characters’ Super moves fans like best, with presumably arbitrary head-to-head pairings like Hawkgirl and Joker, Zod and Killer Frost, Nightwing and Raven, and Green Lantern and Cyborg. Understandably, Boon disabled comments for both rounds’ individual threads, leaving fans to simply cast their votes.

Of course, there are multiple reasons why Boon could be reflecting on the legacy of Injustice: Gods Among Us 13 years later. Naturally, though, because Boon is shining a spotlight on Injustice and requesting engagement regarding the first game’s characters, fans are assuming that these threads and fans’ interactions with them have something to do with Injustice 3.

User pablodrodrigues writes, “Let’s hope for an announcement soon,” and user TerrenceRooks is desperate for this to be some sort of tease of Injustice 3: “I’m hoping man PLEASE.” Interestingly, many fans believe that Injustice 3 won’t actually be titled ‘Injustice 3,’ and that it could be rebranded and named after DC Comics’ DC K.O. crossover event, possibly even taking inspiration from the comic’s storyline for its own narrative.

Admittedly, it wouldn’t be wholly absurd to imagine that Boon might be trying to get a bead on which characters and Supers were favorable in the original Injustice game before formal decisions are made in terms of who will be reprised and how returning characters’ Supers might be iterated on. Either way, we hopefully haven’t seen the last of NetherRealm’s tenure with DC fighting games, as that’s still a market with plenty of fans who’d be overjoyed to know that Injustice 3 is in development.

Injustice 3 would be arriving at a momentous time as a DC IP, sandwiching itself into the DCU’s hot-and-cold reception and DC Comics’ phenomenal success (due, in no small part, to the Absolute universe books, such as Absolute Batman and Absolute Wonder Woman).

Injustice 3 is rumored to be in development.

Injustice is a multimedia franchise consisting of comic books, animated movies, and video games. The comics act as a prequel to the video game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, which was released in April 2013. The storyline follows the Justice League, half of which side with Superman when he turns to villainy after the Joker kills his family.
