We all know Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is happening, even if PlayStation has yet to officially confirm the game. Insomniac Games has one chapter left to tell in its Spider-Man saga, with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 setting the stage for the return of Doctor Octopus, plus Carnage and Spidey’s greatest foe of all: Green Goblin.
Insomniac Games has been teasing Norman Osborn’s turn to the dark green side since Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018, and now that he blames the Spider-Men (Peter Parker and Miles Morales) for putting his son into a coma, it’s clear he’s looking for some revenge. But what will this Green Goblin look like? Spider-Man fans know at this point that versions of the Green Goblin tend to go one of three ways: creepy little dude in a rubber mask, high-tech suit of armor, or Hulk rip-off that can throw fireballs.
Back in December 2023, Insomniac Games was the unfortunate victim of a huge hack in a ransomware attack with the hackers demanding $2 million from the Sony-owned studio. As part of this, some concept art surfaced that shows us which direction Insomniac Games might be taking for Green Goblin in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.
Shared over on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, concept art for the Green Goblin can be seen that appears to show a green-skinned Norman Osborn (I don’t think it’s a mask, anyway) with a bunch of high-tech gear. In other words, it looks like they’re splitting the difference between the mutated Hulk-like Green Goblin of the Ultimate universe with a more classic Green Goblin. Just as well, because nobody really wants their Green Goblin to be a mindless monster. If he’s pretending to be a crying woman in a burning building just to screw with Spider-Man, I want nothing to do with him.
So far, fans seem to be incredibly into this redesign of the classic villain. I should stress that this is concept art (leaked concept art, at that) so it might not be anything like the final version we get in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. Here’s hoping, though.
One fan wrote on Reddit: “Glad they went this route instead of the monster version. The monster version would’ve been too similar to Venom.”
“The monster version is the most bland, uninspired version of the character,” another agreed.
“This is great,” another enthused. “Feels more modern than the original classic design but without going the ‘everyone is in a robo suit’ path of the movies.”
Another fan speculated: “What if they do this version, but as the game progresses, the mutation continues more and then we have a demon goblin by the end of the game?”
At the time of writing, Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 has yet to be officially announced. Insomniac Games is currently focused on Marvel’s Wolverine, which will launch this September. After that? Well, it might just be Goblin o’ Clock.
