Without a shred of irony, The Simpsons: Hit & Run is widely regarded as one of the best open-world games of all time. With many of us getting to experience the 2003 action-adventure game in our childhoods, sure, it has the nostalgia factor, and it has definitely aged in terms of its graphics, but there is no denying that this hit game by Radical Entertainment is remembered fondly.

As such, it remains one of life’s greatest mysteries that it has never received any kind of remaster or remake. Inspired by Grand Theft Auto, just a tad more family friendly, The Simpsons: Hit & Run takes place in the town of Springfield made famous by the animated television show of the same name. The story follows the Simpson family as they deal with mysterious events occurring around the town, including mysterious vans, security cameras, and crop circles.

Earning over three million sales by 2007, it was both a commercial and critical success, but now, over two decades on from its launch, there is still no sign of an official remake despite fans calling out for one over the years.

Luckily, thanks to user TheNachoman180, there is a way to experience The Simpsons: Hit & Run in all its modern-day glory. It may be a mod, but it is the best thing we have right now, and it is clear to see the amount of work that went into this fan-made project.

The mod aims to reimagine vanilla The Simpsons: Hit & Run on a fully connected map. As such, it includes all seven levels from the original game, as well as the addition of bonus maps and races. Additionally, the new missions aim to “better suit the connected map.”

Not only that, but the mod only aims to build upon the original game, rather than replace or edit anything created by Radical Entertainment. As such, fans can expect heaps of new content, as well as improvements on the base game itself.

Here is what The Simpsons: Hit & Run mod includes:

    • Every level, mission, bonus mission and race functional.
    • Game is completely 100%-able.
    • Updated versions of the connected map variations.
    • Car buy locations, clothes, wager race all functional.
    • Missions modified to suit connected map.
    • Coin balance. Coin boxes between Level 1 and 3 are shared. As are 4 to 6. 7 is standalone so you can get heaps in endgame.
    • Working cards and wasps.
    • Bonus cars are working, but you can drive a bonus car to other bonus cars else they won’t spawn. Only one can be loaded at a time. This is an engine limitation.
    • Restored a lot of content to the maps, including some new stuff.
    • English, Spanish, French and German supported.
    • Plenty more.

Available to download at this link, this mod is the perfect way to re-experience The Simpsons: Hit & Run well over two decades on from its initial launch. Who knows? Maybe projects such as this will finally inspire that official remake.
