Nani’s Braids weigh 2 kilos
Nani plays a rugged tribal leader, Jadal, in the film that is set in an 80s backdrop. He underwent a radical head-to-toe transformation with long braided hair, a thick beard, and a fierce, blade-wielding fighting style. The film’s Costume Designer Ajay Kumar J shares that he created an ‘80s rugged street style’ for Nani. And to retain the ruggedness of the look, he played it up with the denims that were famous in the era. “Since Nani plays a rebellious character, we used ‘red colour’ themes and undertones to demonstrate his theory.”
Ajay clarifies the hottest topic – that Nani’s braids weigh around 6 kgs. Although the actor, at a recent press conference, clarified the reports, Ajay gives a closer picture.
“It was the director’s idea to have braids. These braids were actually part of accessories and are made of natural hair. Nani sir grew long hair up to shoulder level, and from there, we made these braids to give a unique spin. The braids would weigh around 2 kilos, and it’s very challenging for Nani to carry them and perform action sequences.”
Initially, the makers wanted to have Nigerian braids during the sketch version. “But the director insisted he wanted longer braids as per the story.”

Silver accessories
The makers wanted to give a retro, tapori and chapri feel from the 80s for Nani’s character. “For accessories like chains at the waist, neck, belt and boots, we brought out a vintage style,” Ajay explains. Apparently, the makers have got original silverware for the accessories. “Through oxidisation with water, we have handcrafted all Nani’s accessories including the leg and neck chains, watch, nose and earring.”

Nani’s wardrobe changes
Although Nani will be seen sporting around 30 wardrobe changes, they are similar in colour pattern. To keep his character more rooted and amplify the dark setting, Ajay used earthy tones like maroon and terracotta pink. “Nani garu had okayed the costumes in a single trail.” Ajay shares that the process of dyeing the fabric, stone wash and acid wash happened in Delhi.”

Mohan Babu’s royal outfits
Ajay, who had worked with many stars earlier, took four months to crack Nani’s look. He did extensive research on the fabric, colour patterns, and created a mood board. “Working for the film for two years has been a liberating experience. It’s challenging, as we also shot continuously in rains and gusty winds with around 700 artistes daily.”
As for Mohan Babu’s look in the film, the cigars shown in the posters were imported from Dubai. “His wardrobe fabric is also imported and is kept a little more luxurious, like the fusion style from the royal 80s.”
