Marshals Season 2’s Early Release Confirms An Inevitable Frustration

The earlier release of Marshals season 2 is both a blessing and a curse for Taylor Sheridan’s latest Yellowstone follow-up, thanks to an irritating quirk of network TV scheduling. Whether viewers love, hate, or are entirely different to his body of work, there is no denying the reality that Taylor Sheridan is one of the biggest voices in TV and streaming. In terms of output alone, the writer/ director can go toe to toe with super producers like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.

Sheridan has also developed a highly recognizable brand, producing some of the most popular Neo-Western shows since Justified hung up its cowboy hat a few years ago. His epic crime saga Yellowstone reimagined Dallas and Dynasty as a grittier and gorier modern tragedy, following the fortunes of a greedy, power-hungry patriarch and his dysfunctional children as they fight tooth and nail to hold on to their sprawling ranch instead of selling it for billions of dollars.

The campy excesses of Yellowstone proved a huge hit, and the show soon spawned the prequels 1883 and 1923. Its 2024 series finale was followed by two sequel shows, Marshals and Dutton Ranch, while Sheridan parlayed this career success into a string of other streaming shows. Tulsa King and its upcoming spinoff, Frisco King, Landman, The Madison, the prison drama Mayor of Kingstown, and the spy series Lioness all followed Sheridan’s Yellowstone success, although none of these hits were network TV releases. The honor went to CBS’s Marshals alone.

Marshals Season 2 Premieres As Part Of CBS’s Fall 2026 Lineup

Although Marshals season 1’s uneasy blend of Yellowstone’s highly serialized drama and a more conventional, traditional network procedural structure rankled some critics, the show was easily a big enough ratings success to warrant a season 2 renewal. Marshals season 2 is set to premiere on October 4, returning to a regular weekly time slot for fall only a few months after season 1’s May finale.

This might, on the surface, seem like unambiguously great news. Marshals is set to continue Kayce Dutton’s complex story sooner rather than later, avoiding the inconsistent and unpredictable gaps between seasons of streaming shows in favor of a reliable network TV release schedule. In an era when Netflix shows like Wednesday and Stranger Things often take multiple-year breaks between seasons, this development seems like it could only be good news.

Therein, however, as Hamlet once said, lies the rub. Where season 1 of Marshals, with its brief 13-episode run, lasted 12 uninterrupted weeks, the upcoming season 2 will be subjected to frustrating hiatuses in the middle of the year. Season 1 only ran every week with barely any disruptions because it was a mid-season premiere, arriving in March 2026. Traditional October and September premieres typically take a multiple week, and sometimes multiple month, break somewhere between November and February.

Marshals Season 2’s Early Release Sets Up Breaks In The Middle Of The Cycle

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that Marshals was the Yellowstone follow-up that became a traditional network TV release for numerous reasons. For one thing, the show’s title alone gives away its biggest selling point for network executives. Yellowstone, its prequels, and most of Sheridan’s subsequent shows have been serialized dramas, ideal for binging on streaming, but potentially frustrating for weekly viewing. Marshals, with its focus on Kayce’s new squad of law enforcement colleagues, is more of a conventional police procedural.

Admittedly, Marshals is hardly a dupe for one of Dick Wolf’s Law & Order shows or an NCIS spinoff. However, the procedural framework has become increasingly experimental in recent years, with shows in the 9-1-1 franchise focusing on first responders like firefighters and paramedics rather than traditional law enforcement officers, while David Boreanaz’s seven-season hit SEAL Team set its procedural story within a military institution.

Thus, Marshals offered CBS the perfect chance to take the Yellowstone franchise’s popularity and tack it onto a network procedural format, combining one of network TV’s most reliable, comforting formulas with one of streaming’s most popular existing intellectual properties. The payoff of this bargain, however, is the reality that viewers will now need to endure less predictable multiple-week waits between episodes, instead of enjoying the comparatively seamless weekly viewing experience of season 1.

Why CBS Moved Marshals To A Fall Release

Given the massive ratings success of Marshals season 1, it was hardly a surprise when CBS pulled Yellowstone’s Kayce spinoff up to a fall release. The crime thriller drew in a superb 9.5 million viewers for its premiere in March, so releasing season 2 as early as September allowed the network to cash in on this popularity instead of making viewers wait until 2027 for Kayce’s return.

Meanwhile, the decision to move Marshals to a fall premiere also allows CBS to expand the show’s season length. Season 1’s 13-episode run was normal for a streaming series, but network procedurals tend to have closer to 18–22 episodes per season, and some have as many as 25. Given the ratings success of the Yellowstone spinoff, CBS has every incentive to capitalize on the show’s popularity with longer seasons, arriving sooner, containing more episodes.

Finally, Marshals can boost the popularity of CBS’s other hit procedural series, Tracker, which shares a lot of creative DNA with the hit Yellowstone spinoff. Both shows are gritty crime dramas about conflicted law enforcement officers who work in a legal grey area, often bending the rules to ensure justice is served while still sticking to their own moral code.

As the above rundown proves, there are many valid reasons for CBS to pull up the release date of Marshals season 2 from a potential 2027 mid-season premiere. However, this does mean that fans of Taylor Sheridan’s shows will be rudely reminded of the limitations of traditional network TV scheduling after the writer/ director’s last slew of projects all enjoyed the comparative freedom offered by streaming releases.

Taylor Sheridan’s Franchise Confirms 1923’s Yellowstone Sequel

Though the Yellowstone prequel series 1944 is still in development limbo, Taylor Sheridan has confirmed 1923’s spiritual sequel is coming next year.

That said, Marshals may well also benefit from this change. Network TV procedurals typically focus on more than one main character, allowing these shows to bounce between lead actors from episode to episode. This gives the real-life stars a break from the shooting spotlight while ensuring viewers are equally engaged in everyone’s story. Since Marshals season 1 mostly focused on Yellowstone’s Kayce, the longer run of season 2 could now see the spinoff explore more characters with the same depth and focus.
