Director Meghna Gulzar’s investigative crime drama Daayra has received positive reviews and applause upon its release. The Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer is being lauded for its gripping moral conflict, sharp direction, and stellar lead performances. While Daayra tackles institutional justice versus instant retribution, the film is showing healthy growth at the box office.
Daayra box office collections
After opening to Rs 1.10 crore (net) on Friday, Daayra registered around Rs 1.80 crore (net) on Saturday – taking the overall collections to Rs 2.90 crore. This takes the total India gross collections to Rs 3.10 crore (gross). The 60 per cent growth on the second day indicates that audiences have lapped up the film. The film is expected to further show an encouraging growth trend at the end of the weekend. While there are no major tentpole Bollywood or pan-India films arriving in theatres around the same time, Daayra can capitalize on the open space and gobble up screen counts.
Saturday’s doubling of numbers also shows that word-of-mouth is picking up strength, and the film is winning on organic audience engagement. The crime thriller recorded a good occupancy of the second day, peaking during evening and night shows.
Daayra gets encouraging reviews
Daayra released to positive and encouraging reviews praising the realistic police procedural elements. Megna Gulzar’s fearless, bold and thought-provoking dive into the complex grey areas of institutional justice versus vigilante retribution is winning accolades.
Kareena Kapoor Khan was lauded for bringing calm authority and emotional weight to the role of DCP Ajooni Kohli. On the other hand, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ability to convey explosive internal anger beneath a polite exterior is being received positively.
Released in theatres on September 18, 2026, Daayra is inspired by the fallout of the 2019 Hyderabad case. The film explores the moral grey areas of uniformed vigilantism.
