Fans of both the Highlander franchise and Henry Cavill are still eagerly awaiting news of the official release date for the upcoming movie, which will see Cavill become the latest A-list actor to take on the role of Connor MacLeod, the immortal Scottish swordsman at the center of the franchise. However, while fans wait, there’s good news: the original 1986 Highlander movie is returning in December with a new release, arriving before the franchise enters its Henry Cavill-led era.

Die-hard fans know the Highlander legacy began with creator and writer Gregory Widen, who wrote the original Highlander story as a UCLA film student for a class project. Little did Widen know that this screenplay wouldn’t just earn him a good grade, but would also become a legendary fantasy franchise that continues to expand today.

The Legend Of Vox Machina Officially Returns In 2027 With Three Prequels

The Legend of Vox Machina is returning in 2027 with three prequels that will feature some of the series’ most underrated yet iconic characters.

While the Highlander franchise has spawned multiple movies, series, and other adaptations, nothing hits quite as hard as the original 1986 movie, which starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod. Now, those who have been missing this era, or simply want to take a walk down nostalgia lane before Henry Cavill’s Highlander era begins, can relive the movie magic with a new upcoming release: Highlander: The Original Screenplay.

Brought to life by Titan Comics, Highlander: The Original Screenplay #1 is an upcoming release set for December 2, 2026. This 32-page epic, currently listed at $4.99, will see original writer Gregory Widen return, alongside artist Szymon Kudrański, as they join forces to tell “the story of the immortal Connor MacLeod as he lives through the centuries facing off against rivals for the mysterious prize.”

Hence, as the title suggests, Highlander: The Original Screenplay will serve as the official comic adaptation of the 1986 movie, with the comic based on Gregory Widen’s original script and delivering the story as fans have never seen it before, thanks to the change in medium and the addition of Kudrański’s lavishly illustrated pages. Notably, Titan Comics also markets the issue as an installment that “presents the original vision for the timeless classic.”

Considering the current hype surrounding the Highlander franchise, the news of this comic is particularly exciting, as it could very well be just the start of a fully fleshed-out and immersive Highlander comic universe. Of course, the continuation of Highlander in comic format will likely depend on fan reception to Highlander: The Original Screenplay. However, given the fandom’s love for the original movie, this release will likely draw a large readership.

Positive fan reception could lead Titan Comics to greenlight an ongoing series, which fans would undoubtedly welcome. If there is one legendary fantasy franchise that deserves a long-form comic adaptation, it’s Highlander. Henry Cavill’s portrayal and the upcoming movie will also inject new enthusiasm and excitement into the fandom, which could help an ongoing Highlander comic series take off.
