Warning: This article contains spoilers for Line of Fire episode 1.Family is complicated enough without everyone working for a different branch of federal law enforcement, but that is exactly what makes the Hollingsworths such an interesting centerpiece for NBC’s Line of Fire. Nearly every member of the family has dedicated their life to public service, even if they have taken very different paths to get there.

Those careers also mean the Hollingsworths’ personal and professional lives rarely stay separate for long. The family stretches across the Secret Service, U.S. Marshals, FBI, and Department of Justice. Each member brings a different perspective and skill set when the seemingly straightforward investigation at the center of the premiere develops into something much bigger.

Understanding where everyone fits within the Hollingsworth family is therefore just as important as knowing which agency employs them. The Line of Fire premiere establishes complicated marriages, sibling dynamics, workplace relationships, and secrets that could become increasingly important as the season unfolds, while making it clear that protecting one another may ultimately prove more difficult than protecting the public.

    Mike Hollingsworth (Peter Krause)

    Secret Service

Mike Hollingsworth is the patriarch of the family and a longtime member of the Secret Service who begins Line of Fire on the verge of retirement. Rather than quietly accepting that his career is coming to an end, Mike pushes to reopen an investigation into a previous assassination attempt against the president because he believes authorities identified the wrong perpetrator.

That investigation also immediately puts Mike’s professional life at odds with his family. He asks Russ to access information from the Department of Justice while simultaneously criticizing Micah for not taking his own Secret Service responsibilities seriously enough. Mike believes protection agents should blend into the background, something he doesn’t think his son always manages to do.

His retirement quickly becomes the least of the family’s concerns, however. After Clare’s boyfriend is murdered inside the Hollingsworth home, Mike’s retirement is put on hold as investigators connect the killing to a recent string of attacks on government agents. Suddenly, the Hollingsworths aren’t just caught up in the investigation — they may be the people someone is actually targeting.

Little does he know the son he thought was dead, Jack, is in fact still alive and about to cause quite a bit of grief for the whole family.

    Jane Hollingsworth (Hope Davis)

    U.S. Marshals Service

    Line of Fire Jane
    Jane Hollingsworth
    NBC Universal

Jane Hollingsworth is a respected member of the U.S. Marshals Service and Mike’s estranged wife, although their relationship is considerably more complicated than a traditional separation. The two aren’t divorced and occasionally still sleep together despite Jane apparently having a boyfriend, making their personal relationship almost as messy as the cases surrounding them.

Professionally, Jane spends much of the premiere investigating the death of another U.S. Marshal. Her colleagues initially see the case as straightforward, believing the Marshal was killed by a fugitive after shooting him herself. Jane nevertheless brings Clare into the investigation for an FBI perspective, even while occasionally appearing dismissive of her daughter’s theories.

By the end of the episode, it becomes clear Jane knew considerably more than she initially revealed. She was aware that the dead Marshal had been secretly working with criminals in exchange for help obtaining cancer treatment, and trusted Clare to uncover the truth herself.

More mysterious is Jane’s discovery of an origami swan at the crime scene, which she secretly pockets. When another appears inside the Hollingsworth home after Logan’s murder, Jane immediately shows Mike before the two hide it, suggesting both of them recognize that its significance extends beyond the case she has been investigating.

    Clare Hollingsworth (Kat Cunning)

    FBI

    Line of Fire Clare
    Clare Hollingsworth
    NBC Universal

Clare Hollingsworth works for the FBI and is determined to establish a career separate from the considerable shadow cast by her parents. She is already excited about pursuing one of her own cases when Jane pulls her into the investigation surrounding the dead U.S. Marshal, something Clare isn’t particularly enthusiastic about because she doesn’t want her professional identity tied to her mother.

Clare nevertheless proves instrumental in uncovering what actually happened. After noticing evidence that doesn’t fit the accepted version of events, she digs into the dead U.S. Marshal’s background and discovers that the woman had gone rogue. Desperate for cancer treatment in Mexico, she had secretly begun working with the very people the Marshals were pursuing.

Clare’s personal life becomes even more important to the larger story through her boyfriend, Logan. The two have been together for six months, but their relationship begins unraveling during an uncomfortable Hollingsworth family dinner when Logan discovers Clare never told him about Jack, the brother the family believes died by suicide five years earlier.

Logan eventually returns to the empty Hollingsworth home and discovers that Jack has deliberately been hidden in a folded family photograph. Worse, Jack is actually Logan’s seemingly friendly neighbor. Jack kills Logan before Clare and the rest of the family return home, transforming Clare’s personal tragedy into the first direct indication that the Hollingsworths themselves are at the center of something much larger.

Mike “Micah” Hollingsworth Jr. (Tommy O’Brien)

    Secret Service

    Line of Fire Micah
    Micah Hollingsworth
    NBC Universal

Micah Hollingsworth followed his father into the Secret Service, but the premiere makes it immediately clear that father and son have very different approaches to the job. While Mike values discretion above almost everything else, Micah is considerably more willing to bend the rules — especially when his assignment protecting the president’s daughter becomes personal.

Micah is secretly having an affair with the woman he is supposed to protect, creating an enormous professional liability before the season has even properly begun. After the two have sex inside an apartment she is considering moving into, Micah discovers a camera that may have captured everything. Rather than reporting the situation through proper channels, he asks a colleague to investigate the landlord and hopes to recover any footage before his supervisors, particularly his father, find out.

Micah nearly confesses during a conversation with Mike and Russ, only to learn that the camera wasn’t recording after all. Instead of treating the close call as a warning, he decides to keep the affair secret and redirects the conversation toward Mike’s retirement.

That choice establishes Micah as one of the family’s biggest potential vulnerabilities. His secret hasn’t caused lasting consequences yet, but Line of Fire makes it clear that keeping something this significant hidden while the Hollingsworth family becomes entangled in a conspiracy could eventually make matters considerably worse.

    Russ Hollingsworth (Taylor Bloom)

    Department of Justice

    NBC

Russ Hollingsworth is the youngest and least experienced member of the family, having only recently joined the Department of Justice. Unlike his siblings, Russ is still trying to establish himself within his chosen career, and his family name immediately complicates that process. His new colleagues want reassurance that his relationship with Mike won’t outweigh his responsibility to keep confidential DOJ information private.

That concern is almost immediately tested when Mike asks Russ to obtain information connected to the assassination investigation he wants reopened. Russ initially refuses, insisting he earned his DOJ position on his own. Mike responds by claiming he helped influence the hiring decision, only revealing later that he lied and Russ actually received the position entirely on his own merits.

Russ ultimately does obtain the information his father requested, reinforcing exactly why the DOJ had concerns about hiring him. His role in the larger mystery remains less developed than those of the other Hollingsworths by the end of the premiere, but that could quickly change.

Once evidence suggests someone is specifically targeting government agents, Russ and his family are warned to stay alert because the ultimate target may be one of them. For someone only beginning his government career, Russ has already found himself caught between professional loyalty and the Hollingsworth family’s increasingly dangerous problems.

Line of Fire airs Mondays at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
