Mike Flanagan’s New Stephen King Series Officially Releases Next Week

Stephen King may be the Master of Horror when it comes to the written word, but it took Mike Flanagan’s contributions to fully realize these stories’ potential on the big and small screens, with a new entry due to be released in a week’s time. King’s novels have been adapted dozens of times since his career began, with a handful managing to gain widespread acclaim.

However, since collaborating with Mike Flanagan, some of Stephen King’s best stories have taken on a brand new life. Flanagan is an incredible director and writer with the ability to create tense, thrilling stories for the screen. With his captivating original horror shows, such as his hit Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan has proven that he knows how to deliver the level of suspense and horror that King’s works are known for.

But, beyond his own original works, Flanagan’s earliest collaboration with King on Gerald’s Game, adapting a novel that was widely considered to be unfilmable, established that he was without a doubt the ideal partner to revisit several of the classics, as well as tackle a couple more recent stories for adaptations, and one of the most hotly anticipated is just around the corner.

Stephen King’s Carrie, the 1974 novel by Stephen King, has become perhaps the single most important contribution in King’s entire career. Despite being his first published work, Carrie was quickly adapted into a feature film just two years after the book was published, with Sissy Spacek taking on the titular role in what has become one of the most iconic horror films ever made.

Since then, King’s works have been a hot ticket for studios to adapt, but Carrie has always stood out as the gold standard. Now, Flanagan is set to take on the immense challenge of re-adapting this story, and considering how other remakes have been received, this will certainly be a proving ground for just how far Flanagan’s capabilities can take him.

Fortunately, with the entire eight-episode miniseries dropping on Prime Video from October 7, audiences won’t have to wait long to experience this story again. And if anyone is capable of bringing the story up to date and creating something that could potentially rival what we have seen in the past, Flanagan seems like the man for the job. And behind the scenes, it certainly appears that King and other executives continue to back him.

Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King Adaptations Will Continue After Carrie

While Carrie is getting its public release next week, King was given access to the scripts early on, and at every turn, King has praised Flanagan’s work. In addition, Flanagan has now been attached to several more Stephen King adaptations, including a feature-length remake of The Mist, and an ambitious plan for a multi-season series based on The Dark Tower books, which has been attempted in the past to less than stellar reviews.

With all of these irons in the fire, it’s clear that Flanagan has a great deal of backing and support from not only the Master of Horror himself, but also executives and producers who are essential to getting these projects made in the first place. With that, Carrie’s release becomes a stepping stone to what will hopefully be a lengthy and fruitful relationship between Flanagan and King.

And while the handful of upcoming adaptations are already in the works, it does seem likely that the success of Carrie, and whether or not it manages to overtake the earlier adaptation for new audiences, will be a strong indicator for the future of these collaborations. With that said, bring on Carrie.
