Set against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi’s life and legacy, Gandhi and My Mother explores a lesser-known chapter from the later years of his life. The film focuses on a 21-day period around the time of India’s Independence, rather than attempting to chronicle his entire life. The makers unveiled the look of Bajpayee as Gandhi and Waheeda Rehman as Putlibai, Gandhi’s mother.
The project also has a personal connection for Sudhir Mishra. The filmmaker has previously revealed that his mother, Durga Devendra Nath Mishra, had met Gandhi as a child, and that their conversations about him stayed with him. Before her death in 2022, Mishra said he had promised her that he would make a film on Gandhi.

The film is currently being referred to by its working title, Gandhi and My Mother, with the final title and release date yet to be announced.
