The Last Airbender Officially Switches Genres With New Episodes

Avatar: The Last Airbender is officially switching genres when the franchise returns with new episodes. From the original Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon to its sequel, The Legend of Korra (and various books and graphic novels), Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko’s Avatar world is, at its heart, a clear-cut story of good triumphing over evil. The Avatar is the ultimate being of balance, a shining beacon of hope and the power of unity.

Avatar Aang was on a mission to save the world from the Fire Nation’s tyrannical colonization. As such, Avatar: The Last Airbender was a war story, an age-old tale of fighting back against oppression. Korra faced increasingly destructive and deadly enemies, from the Equalists to the ancient dark spirit Vaatu, the Red Lotus, and Kuvira, an imperialistic Earth Kingdom warlord. The Legend of Korra was a story of spirituality and rebirth, as Korra and her friends tried to uphold Aang’s legacy and desire for peace in Republic City and beyond.

Now, however, as Avatar enters an entirely new era, the franchise will evolve from an action-adventure narrative of war and revitalization into something arguably even more dangerous. Paramount+’s new Avatar series, Avatar: Seven Havens, follows the next Avatar after Korra, a young Earthbender named Pavi, as she reunites with her long-lost twin and searches for the truth behind her and her sister’s mysterious origin. That’s not all, though. At this point in the Avatar timeline, the 1920s-inspired, industrialized, technologically advanced world of The Legend of Korra is long gone, and something new has taken its place.

Avatar: Seven Havens Is A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Story

Avatar: Seven Havens is, above all else, a post-apocalyptic survival story. According to the show’s synopsis, Seven Havens is set in a “shattered” world. Shots in the official trailer reveal a walled-off city in a barren desert, the terrain ravaged by unimaginably massive, destructive weather events like tornadoes, hurricanes, and eerie (spirit-powered?) lightning storms.

The event that “doomed the world” is known as the Cataclysm; a newly released Avatar: Seven Havens clip shows a group of actors on stage giving a succinct (though potentially not entirely accurate) summary of how the titular Seven Havens came to be. It’s a nice nod to one of Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s most beloved episodes, “The Ember Island Players.“ As the young actor explains, “The Cataclysm left our world in ruins. Our ancestors banded together and created the Seven Havens. Out from the rubble and chaos, we became our own heroes.”

Whisper It, But Avatar: Seven Havens Will Prove Korra Haters Wrong

Avatar: Seven Havens has set Korra up as a destroyer, reinforcing some negative opinions about her. However, I think this is a big misdirection.

If only seven civilized strongholds remain in the Avatar world, then humanity is on the brink of collapse. One destructive sandstorm, one tyrannical leader, or one vengeful spirit could doom humanity forever. Whereas Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra showed the world’s rapid technological and societal progress, especially once the Fire Nation stopped hoarding resources, the people of Avatar: Seven Havens have been forced to start anew.

Like the two previous Avatar shows, Seven Havens will be divided into separate “Books,” featuring a new common theme or narrative thread per season. Rather than watching the Avatar master a new element or become more attuned to the spirit world, the first book in Avatar: Seven Havens is titled “Survival.” This won’t be a story of change and growth; at least, not at first. It’s a story about holding on, much like the early days of fellow post-apocalyptic franchises The Walking Dead or The Last of Us.

Avatar: Seven Havens’ Cataclysm Changes The Avatar’s Role In The Story

Avatar: Seven Havens Pavi looking into the distance.

According to the play’s narrator, the Cataclysm didn’t just come out of nowhere. “The Avatar’s cruel reign over humanity finally ended, yet the Cataclysm left our world in ruins.” The official Seven Havens trailer includes a shot that appears to be a flashback of Korra in the Avatar State, fighting something that looks suspiciously like an evolved form of The Legend of Korra’s spirit vines. This apparently had devastating consequences. The new Avatar’s voice says, “I can’t be an Avatar. I’m no warrior, and the last one doomed the world.”

Rather than being seen as humanity’s savior or greatest hope, as Aang once was, the new Avatar will be shunned for her power, hated by the very people she’s meant to protect. While Korra, certainly, had her own detractors, especially after she reopened the portal to the spirit world, she was never seen as a destroyer; it was always clear that she believed she was doing the right thing, and people still looked to her for guidance and help, at least during The Legend of Korra‘s time.

Who will Pavi turn to for guidance if everyone hates her? Who will help her fulfill her destiny? Her enemies won’t just be terrible rulers or power-hungry dissenters. Regular people struggling to survive will also want to blame her. Avatar: Seven Havens’ post-apocalyptic world certainly won’t be a haven for the new Avatar.

Avatar: Seven Havens premieres with three episodes on October 9, only on Paramount+. New episodes arrive weekly on Fridays.

How do you feel about Avatar shifting into a darker, post-apocalyptic survival story with Seven Havens?
