Michael Fassbender’s Hit Paramount Action Thriller Confirmed With Season 3 Setback

The Agency season 3 gets hit with a delay.

An initial report on the future of the Michael Fassbender-led spy series sounded positive. An industry analysis listed The Agency season 3 among the Paramount+ Originals that are slated to return, along with established hits such as Landman and The Madison. However, the renewal was never directly confirmed by Paramount itself.

Now, in a new interview with The Playlist alongside his War co-star Sienna Miller, The Agency‘s Dominic West was asked about the status of season 3. The actor, who plays the Director of the CIA, mentions that the series may have been delayed, though he stresses he’s unsure. In the quote below, West is hopeful about the fact that there will be more episodes:

I don’t know. I was talking to someone about it last night, and I think there was some delay about it for some reason. But hopefully there will, yeah. I think we need to see more of the new head of the CIA.

The Agency season 3 and many other projects are essentially a question mark after the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. under David Ellison’s Skydance. Looking at the streaming realm alone, there have been significant changes. Cindy Holland, who was leading the charge at Paramount+, has now exited the merged company. Instead, HBO veteran Casey Bloys will be the lead on streaming for both HBO Max and Paramount. The two platforms are also currently expected to merge, as well, after a brief bundling period.

What that means for the viewer and someone hoping for more episodes of The Agency is that things are in flux. It is not unusual, and in fact, it is expected, for there to be some programming changes after a massive merger that leads to a significant executive shuffle. In the case of the Fassbender series specifically, it debuted to headline-grabbing viewership in late 2024. The show’s second installment, by comparison, was released in a quiet binge drop over this past summer.

The series is based on the French drama Le Bureau des Légendes, with Fassbender starring as CIA officer Martian. It was created by sibling duo Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, and features Jodie Turner-Smith, Jeffrey Wright, and Richard Gere in key roles as part of The Agency‘s cast.

The show left Martian in a place where his story could seemingly continue. But renewals ultimately come down to the question of cost versus viewership. And since the merged company is looking to cut costs and shed some debt, who knows what that will mean for streaming originals that may have been easy renewals at one point in time.
