WB’s attempt to revive Babylon 5 seems to have stalled, but many still want the beloved sci-fi series to make a proper live-action comeback. Originally airing between 1994 and 1998, Babylon 5 remains a cult classic, with a politically complex story that many fans still consider unrivaled. The appetite for a Babylon 5 reboot hasn’t diminished, especially given how a modern prestige TV budget could bring J. Michael Straczynski’s ambitious space opera to life with the modern filmmaking visuals its grand concepts deserve.
Of course, one of the biggest challenges facing any hypothetical reboot would be assembling a new cast. The original Babylon 5 actors delivered iconic performances that cemented the show’s legacy, and replacing them would be no easy task. However, there are several modern stars who would be ideal for a 2026 Babylon 5 remake, and their previous roles prove it.
Timothy Olyphant As John Sheridan
Originally Played By Bruce Boxleitner
John Sheridan is arguably the most important character in Babylon 5, and finding an actor capable of matching Bruce Boxleitner’s original performance would be a significant challenge. Introduced in season 2, Sheridan becomes the station’s commander following Jeffrey Sinclair’s departure, eventually emerging as a pivotal figure in the war against the Shadows and the resistance to President Clark’s authoritarian Earth government. Sheridan’s combination of moral conviction and natural charisma makes him one of the most compelling sci-fi TV show protagonists ever put to screen.
Of all the options available to replace Bruce Boxleitner in Babylon 5, Timothy Olyphant would be a perfect candidate. As his incredible performance as Raylan Givens in Justified proves, Olyphant excels at portraying authority figures whose easygoing charm conceals an uncompromising determination to do what’s right. Justified, along with his roles in the likes of Deadwood and The Mandalorian, demonstrate how effectively he can convey leadership without relying on excessive intensity. Olyphant could capture Sheridan’s occasional stubbornness and dry humor, but would also bring the necessary gravitas to Sheridan’s eventual transformation into a revolutionary leader.
Wes Chatham As Jeffrey Sinclair
Originally Played By Michael O’Hare
Despite only serving as the show’s central protagonist for its first season, Jeffrey Sinclair is an essential part of Babylon 5. Played by Michael O’Hare, the station’s original commander is a decorated EarthForce officer whose mysterious experiences during the Earth-Minbari War become integral to Babylon 5’s overarching mythology. Sinclair is also a markedly different character from Sheridan. He’s more reserved, introspective, and haunted by his past.
It’s a difficult role to recast, but Wes Chatham would be a great fit for Sinclair in a Babylon 5 reboot. Best known for playing Amos Burton in The Expanse, Chatham has already demonstrated his ability to bring emotional depth to a seemingly stoic character in a complex sci-fi setting. While Sinclair is considerably more diplomatic and restrained than Amos, Chatham’s understated intensity would suit a military officer struggling with traumatic memories and unanswered questions. His experience with The Expanse also means he’s no stranger to sprawling interplanetary politics and morally complicated conflicts.
Mackenzie Davis As Susan Ivanova
Originally Played By Claudia Christian
Claudia Christian’s performance ensured Susan Ivanova became one of the most beloved characters in Babylon 5. Her razor-sharp wit, fierce loyalty, and formidable personality feel inimitable. The sarcastic demeanor of the station’s second-in-command conceals a deeply compassionate individual, and her personal tragedies make her one of the show’s most emotionally complex characters. Any new Babylon 5 cast would need an actor capable of balancing these contrasting qualities with the same skill that Claudie Christian did back in the 1990s.
This makes Mackenzie Davis an ideal candidate for playing Ivanova in a Babylon 5 reboot. She has already established herself as an outstanding sci-fi performer through roles in Black Mirror, The Martian, Station Eleven, and Terminator: Dark Fate, to name a few. She’s not limited to the genre though, and her filmography regularly proves that she excels at portraying fiercely intelligent characters whose abrasive exteriors mask considerable emotional vulnerability, and has a natural talent for delivering dry, understated humor. All of these skills would be essential for capturing Ivanova’s distinctive personality.
Karl Urban As Michael Garibaldi
Originally Played By Jerry Doyle
Few characters in Babylon 5 are quite as entertaining as Jerry Doyle’s Michael Garibaldi, the station’s security chief. He’s a cynical, street-smart investigator whose unconventional methods frequently put him at odds with authority. However, Garibaldi is also deeply flawed, with a complicated past that’s left him with alcoholism and trust issues. Still, despite his shortcomings, Garibaldi possesses an unwavering loyalty to his friends and an instinctive distrust of corruption. This combination of hard-boiled detective and reluctant hero makes him an especially interesting character to recast in a Babylon 5 reboot.
The Boys star Karl Urban would be an almost perfect replacement for Jerry Doyle, especially when considering his portrayal of Billy Butcher. He has a remarkable ability to make abrasive, morally compromised characters entertaining without diminishing their darker qualities. Roles like Judge Dredd in Dredd and Leonard McCoy in the rebooted Star Trek movies further demonstrate his suitability, especially when balancing sardonic humor with emotionally intense moments. Urban could easily capture Garibaldi’s cynical worldview and combative personality while giving his struggles with addiction and personal betrayal the dramatic weight they deserve.
William Jackson Harper As Dr. Stephen Franklin
Originally Played By Richard Biggs
Played in the 1994-1998 run by Richard Biggs, Dr. Stephen Franklin provides much of Babylon 5‘s moral foundation. As the station’s chief medical officer, Franklin is an exceptionally talented physician whose dedication to preserving life frequently places him in difficult ethical situations. He’s compassionate and principled, but also stubborn, obsessive, and occasionally blinded by his conviction that he knows what’s best. His struggles with stimulant addiction and his willingness to defy military orders make him considerably more complicated than the typical science fiction doctor.
William Jackson Harper would bring a fascinating new dimension to Franklin. His portrayal of Chidi in The Good Place demonstrated his exceptional ability to communicate intellectual intensity and moral anxiety, both of which are central to Franklin’s personality. What’s more, his performance in The Resort revealed his talent for portraying emotionally exhausted characters confronting circumstances beyond their control. Harper would be ideal for emphasizing Franklin’s intellectual curiosity and genuine compassion, bringing to life a character whose greatest strengths are inseparable from his most significant weaknesses just like Richard Biggs did in the original Babylon 5 run.
Elizabeth Debicki As Delenn
Originally Played By Mira Furlan
Miral Furlan’s Delenn is easily one of the most challenging characters in Babylon 5 to recast for a reboot. The Minbari ambassador initially appears to be an enigmatic religious figure whose knowledge extends far beyond what she’s willing to reveal. However, Delenn gradually emerges as one of the series’ most influential leaders. Her transformation into a human-Minbari hybrid also makes her central to the show’s exploration of identity, cultural reconciliation, and the possibility of overcoming centuries of prejudice. Taking over from Mira Furlan is a difficult undertaking, but The Crown and The Night Manager star Elizabeth Debicki feels ideal.
At 6’2”, Elizabeth Debicki’s towering physical presence combined with her naturally composed demeanor would make her instantly convincing as a member of the Minbari’s enigmatic ruling class. Not only that, but her performances in The Crown and The Night Manager demonstrate her ability to portray emotionally complicated individuals whose outward elegance conceals considerable inner turmoil. Her portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown in particular proved her ability to convey the emotional cost of living under immense political and social expectations. It’s experience that’s invaluable for a character whose personal choices ultimately reshape the relationship between two civilizations.
Peter Capaldi As Londo Mollari
Originally Played By Peter Jurasik
Londo Mollari’s journey from comic relief to tragic political figure is one of Babylon 5’s most satisfying character arcs, and Peter Jurasik was essential to making it work. Initially introduced as the flamboyant, frequently intoxicated Centauri ambassador, Londo appears more interested in nostalgia-fueled hedonism than fulfilling his diplomatic responsibilities. However, being pulled into a series of disastrous political alliances transforms him into a central figure in the galaxy’s escalating conflicts. Recasting London in 2026 would need an actor capable of switching between comedy and devastating dramatic intensity. With this in mind, there’s no better choice than Peter Capaldi.
Peter Capaldi’s portrayal of Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It demonstrated his mastery of political satire, while his tenure as the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who revealed a talent for portraying deeply conflicted characters burdened by regret. Capaldi could make Londo’s early arrogance and theatrical outbursts in Babylon 5 genuinely hilarious before gradually exposing the tragedy beneath his ambitions. His ability to deliver emotionally devastating monologs would also be invaluable during Londo’s later storylines. Few actors could so convincingly portray a character who helps engineer his civilization’s downfall while desperately believing he’s restoring its greatness.
Giancarlo Esposito As G’Kar
Originally Played By Andreas Katsulas
G’Kar undergoes arguably the most intense character development in Babylon 5. Introduced as the Narn ambassador, G’Kar’s hatred of Londo Mollari forms one of the show’s most compelling rivalries. However, his journey eventually transforms him from a vengeful political agitator into a spiritual leader who advocates reconciliation. It’s an extraordinary character arc that demands an actor capable of conveying intelligence, rage, dignity, and profound personal transformation with the same finesse as original star Andreas Katsulas. This is why, of all the available modern actors, Giancarlo Esposito feels tailor-made to play G’Kar in a 2026 Babylon 5 remake.
Giancarlo Esposito’s career has been built on his remarkable ability to portray characters whose calm exteriors conceal extraordinary emotional intensity. His performances as Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, Stan Edgar in The Boys, and Stanley Johnston in The Gentlemen showcased an uncanny ability to communicate menace and gravitas through the smallest gestures. Watching a Giancarlo Esposito version of G’Kar evolve from a calculating diplomat consumed by revenge into a genuinely enlightened figure could become the defining performance of a Babylon 5 reboot.
