Harry Potter’s Coldest Line Wasn’t In The Books (But It’s So Good, The Remake Should Use It Anyway)

The Harry Potter books, movies, and soon-to-be TV show are full of incredible moments and iconic lines, with some of the very best coming directly from the screen, rather than J.K. Rowling’s novels. And as we head toward HBO’s small screen, big budget remake, that highlights one of its challenges: how much it can repeat from the movies, and how much it needs to change.

After all, this is a series that’s definitely playing on the popularity of and nostalgia for the Harry Potter films, which also fuel a global tourism, theme park, and merchandise empire. The balance is a tricky one, and some criticisms of things like the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone trailer have suggested it’s repeating too much of the aesthetic from the theatrical adaptations, at least for some viewers’ tastes.

At the same time, there is a willingness to change, and to expand: the remake will include things the movies didn’t, such as Peeves the Poltergeist, and even go beyond the page, too (such as showing Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger receiving their Hogwarts letters). Of course, much of the dialogue will come from the books, and thus, inevitably, be similar to the movies anyway, but it should also think about borrowing the coldest movie-only line.

Harry Potter Delivered His Coldest Line To Professor Umbridge

Harry Potter, Dolores Umbridge, and Hermione Granger in Order of the Phoenix

When it comes to the best Harry Potter quotes, many of them are a lot warmer: the words and wisdom of Albus Dumbledore, for instance, tend to endure as life-lessons for us all. There are some colder, darker, or more outright wicked quotes that come from its array of villains, but one of the greatest was actually said by Harry himself.

This came in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Professor Dolores Umbridge encounters the Centaurs in the Forbidden Forest, and is swiftly attacked and taken away by them. Desperate, she begs Harry for help, pleading with him to tell the creatures that she means them no harm, to which he coolly replies:

“I’m sorry, Professor. I must not tell lies.”

It’s a blunt, brutal, and overall rather brilliant response, delivered in cold, cutting fashion by Daniel Radcliffe, and ties back to Umbridge’s punishment of Harry earlier in the movie. During his detention, she’d forced him to write lines using a magical quill (known as a Black Quill or Blood Quill), which carved the words “I must not tell lies” into his hand. He took it without giving the satisfaction of complaining, but it’s also not the kind of thing you forgot, and practicing those lines came in handy at the perfect moment for sweet revenge.

While Umbridge’s fate in the book is the same, Harry’s role is different, as he and Hermione are more simply bystanders to what’s unfolding, rather than him taking the active role in refusing to help. It’s not bad by any means, but I do prefer the movie’s take. It fits well with the tonal shift the series takes in the back-half, and makes Harry a little less innocent, a bit more grown-up, and gives him more agency in the defeat of the person who is, after Lord Voldemort himself, one of the most detestable villains in the saga.

It’s a scene that’s very much ingrained in my mind when it comes to these events, to the point that I’m always a little surprised it isn’t actually in the book. And while I think the TV show does need to lean away from the movies as much as possible, I think it’s such a fantastic addition that the sequence is lesser without it. It’s also not something that feels like it belongs too much to Radcliffe’s version of the character to replicate, and so it’s one line that the Harry Potter remake should definitely think about including when it finally gets to The Order of the Phoenix.

Harry Potter is a multimedia franchise about an orphaned boy who enrolls at Hogwarts School of Wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family, and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world. Adapted from the novels, Harry Potter is an eight-episode film saga that follows the journey of Harry Potter and his friends, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley, as they navigate the tricky world of growing up, school life, and magic. Starting from year one and moving to their seventh year, the films chronicle the students’ time at Hogwarts while unfurling a sinister plot that centers around the unsuspecting Harry. With the return of the dark wizard, Voldemort, the students and professors at Hogwarts will fight to carry on as the world around them may change forever. Harry Potter has expanded beyond the world of its films and novels with several video games, a spin-off film series titled Fantastic Beasts, and even attractions at Universal Studios.
