Chicago Med Pays Off Archer’s Controversial Demotion In Season 12

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Chicago Med season 12, episode 3, called “They Call Me Ms. Goodwin.”Chicago Med wasted no time in introducing major changes to Gaffney Med’s ED in season 12, and the status quo still hasn’t settled after three episodes. The fallout from the season 11 cliffhanger forced Goodwin to make a decision early in NBC’s fall 2026 TV schedule, and she faced the consequences in “They Call Me Ms. Goodwin.” Despite the massive shift for Goodwin in One Chicago’s medical drama, however, the episode hinged on a twist that happened more than a year ago for Archer.

One of the biggest changes in season 12 has been the absence of ED Chief Caitlin Lenox, who left Chicago to pursue a drug trial in Zurich to treat her prion disease. Fans don’t have to worry about whether Lenox will decide to stay in Switzerland forever; her absence is due to Sarah Ramos’ real-life maternity leave. Gaffney needed somebody to fill in for Lenox, and the most logical replacement was Archer, her former co-chief. He stayed in the ED as an attending after being demoted in season 10, though he came dangerously close to leaving the hospital altogether.

As of season 12’s third episode, Goodwin’s controversial decision to demote Archer in favor of the then-new Lenox has paid off. He brought Goodwin to the ED as a nurse so she could keep fighting to take down Miranda. He defended her throughout “They Call Me Ms. Goodwin,” infuriating Miranda so much that she ousted him from his role as interim chief. He wasn’t exactly upset about losing the extra responsibilities, and Archer taking the heat for bringing back Goodwin was the ideal solution to the problem of Miranda’s vendetta.

Archer Is Thriving As An Attending

As an attending physician in the ED, Archer wouldn’t have had the power to hire Goodwin as a nurse. However, as the acting chief of the ED for the first few episodes of season 12, he had no problem with taking advantage of legal loopholes to bring the former hospital administrator back to Gaffney. It was enough to make him Miranda’s newest target, but she could only fire him from his role as Lenox’s temporary replacement.

Thanks to his interim role as chief of the ED in season 12, Archer was the only character in the show who could oppose Miranda, lose his position, and still stay on at the hospital in his preferred job. The gig was always going to be temporary, and the consequences would have been much more severe if he were the full-time chief. When Miranda informed him that he would no longer be running the ED, he flippantly responded:

Oh, you mean I get to spend more time with my baby girl? How dare you. It was a temp gig anyway. Besides, Lenox will be back in a few weeks, right?

If Archer were still the full-time ED Chief rather than Lenox, then Miranda removing him from the role would have been a major problem for everyone on Goodwin’s side. Instead, he’s just going back to his old job. A conversation between Frost and Ripley even confirmed he’d held the interim job for less than a month. If anyone was going to go against Miranda in defense of Goodwin, Archer was the perfect person to do it without suffering severe consequences. His demotion wasn’t exactly a fun storyline in season 10, but certainly paid off in season 12.

As an attending, Archer has been a hands-on doctor in the ED while also forming healthier bonds in his personal life. He’s back on good terms with his son, started an unconventional relationship with Hannah, and is the proud father of a baby girl. Even his usual gruffness has been more good-natured in recent seasons. He’s thriving in the role that was originally a downgrade. Unless Miranda intends to punish him further for supporting Goodwin, he should be just fine.

    When Lenox Is Coming Back

Of course, Archer’s actions as interim chief may mean Lenox will face a mess in the ED as soon as she’s back from her trial. Fortunately, the wait won’t be too much longer. After making a quick cameo in the season 12 premiere, Sarah Ramos is set to return in the sixth episode this fall. Only two more episodes are left without Lenox.

That means she’ll be back in time for Colin Donnell’s return as Dr. Connor Rhodes. Like most of the current staff at Gaffney, Lenox wasn’t around during Connor’s four-season run as a series regular, so it should be interesting to see what she makes of him. Goodwin will be the one who recruits him back to Gaffney for the fall finale.

Of course, the biggest question concerning Lenox’s return is whether the drug trial will be a viable treatment for her prion disease. If not, she’ll undoubtedly have plenty of weight on her shoulders to go along with whatever mess she inherits from Archer in the ED. For now, keep tuning in to NBC on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET to see what problems Miranda and Mallory cause on Chicago Med.
