Over its decade-long run, Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes brought us endless laughs. But the strip was defined by more than humor, often offering profound insights into life and death. When it comes to grief, Calvin and Hobbes delivered one of the best quotes in comic strip history. But be warned: you’ll likely need a box of tissues on hand.

Like most comic strips, Calvin and Hobbes typically delivered a mini-story or scene in a single strip consisting of several panels. However, in 1987, Bill Watterson broke from this format, telling a heartbreaking story arc across nine strips published March 9 to March 18, 1987. Often referred to as “The Baby Raccoon,” the arc follows Calvin as he finds an injured baby raccoon and, with his parents’ help, tries to save it. However, despite their best efforts, the little raccoon passes away.

31 Years Later, Calvin and Hobbes’ Greatest Quote Still Has No Equal

The perspective of a mischievous six-year-old boy and his imaginary tiger has resulted in some of the greatest quotes in comic strip history.

This story arc explores themes of life and death while delivering several exceptional quotes about grief and processing loss. However, among the many poignant lines found across these nine strips, one stands out as perhaps the greatest quote about grief in all of comic strip history: “I’m crying because out there he’s gone. But he’s not gone inside me.”

Calvin And Hobbes’ Greatest Quote On Grief, Explained

    Published in March 1987

“I’m crying because out there he’s gone. But he’s not gone inside me” is a quote that comes from the sixth strip in the “Baby Raccoon” story arc, published on March 14, 1987. In this strip, Calvin learns from his dad that the baby raccoon has died despite their best efforts to save it. Calvin is understandably heartbroken and begins to cry, while his dad tries to console him.

Calvin’s dad says, “At least he died warm and safe, Calvin. We did all we could, but now he’s gone.” Through his tears, Calvin replies, “…I know. I’m crying because out there he’s gone. But he’s not gone inside me.” This quote is as heartbreaking as it is exceptional, offering a simple yet remarkably accurate description of grief. Calvin is essentially saying that while the raccoon is no longer physically with him, the little creature will live on in his heart through his memories and the emotions attached to them.

This powerful quote about grief and love captures how grief is the pain of losing someone in the world around us, while love is how we carry them within us despite their absence. What makes this story arc even more remarkable, however, is that it was inspired by a true story from Bill Watterson’s own life.

In the Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book, the strip published on March 9, 1987, is accompanied by a creator’s note from Watterson: “My wife found a dead kitten outside one morning and this story almost wrote itself. Most of my earlier strips had simple gags, so this was a big departure in tone. Death, of course, is not a common subject for a “kid” strip. This story not only revealed new facets of Calvin’s personality but it also suggested to me that the strip was broad enough to handle a wide range of subjects, ideas, and emotions. The strip’s world suddenly opened up.”

This background shows how Watterson captured the pain of loss and grief so beautifully and accurately in this story arc. It is also fascinating that the experience became a turning point for the strip, showing Watterson that Calvin and Hobbes could explore deeper facets of life and emotion, including subjects like death that family-friendly comics rarely address so directly. Nearly four decades later, the words in this Calvin and Hobbes strip remain a timeless reminder that even when someone we love is gone from the world, the love we carry for them never truly disappears.
