Netflix & Peacock Go Head-To-Head With Rival Karin Slaughter Adaptations

Crime writer Karin Slaughter is becoming quite the TV celebrity, as two adaptations of her work will go head to head on rival streaming services this November. An award-winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author with over 25 books to her name, Slaughter is known for her gritty, Georgia-set mystery novels, most notably the Will Trent and Grant County series.

Slaughter’s first adaptation came in 2022, when Netflix made her standalone 2018 novel Pieces of Her into a miniseries starring Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote. Far from one of Netflix’s best thriller shows, Pieces of Her received a poor 51% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and vanished from the pop culture conversation almost as soon as it premiered. However, the author’s next TV series would fare much better.

In 2023, ABC brought Slaughter’s beloved Will Trent to the small screen. Ramón Rodríguez stars as the titular foster kid turned GBI agent, who uses his unique perspective and keen observation skills to achieve the highest clearance rate in the bureau, much to the chagrin (and envy) of his colleagues. Not only has it earned a highly respectable 89% Rotten Tomatoes score, but the police procedural has been a hit with audiences, with Will Trent season 5 set to premiere in January 2027.

Though Will Trent will continue to remain available on Hulu, it’s getting a major streaming shakeup next month. This comes just in time for the series to compete with Slaughter’s newest adaptation, The Good Daughter, which also arrives in November.

November will be an exciting month for Will Trent fans, as the show becomes even more accessible. On November 3, Will Trent seasons 1 to 4 will become available on Netflix. This does not change the procedural’s availability on Hulu, and Will Trent season 5 will continue its standard release schedule, airing on ABC on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM ET, with next-day streaming on Hulu.

Network TV procedurals and novel adaptations tend to find a massive new audience when they hit Netflix, so Will Trent is expected to do very well. What’s more interesting is how it will perform against The Good Daughter, which arrives on Peacock on November 12, with all six episodes available to stream.

Based on Slaughter’s 2017 standalone novel of the same name, The Good Daughter stars Rose Byrne and Meghann Fahy as sisters Samantha and Charlotte Quinn, whose lives go in totally different directions following a brutal home invasion in their childhood in which their mother was killed.

After The White Lotus & Sirens, Meghann Fahy’s Next TV Show Continues A Great 3-Year Career Trend

Meghann Fahy has become increasingly popular since her successful turn on The White Lotus, and that impressive career streak will continue.

Charlotte has remained in their hometown of Pikeville, Georgia, and has followed in the footsteps of their father, Rusty (Brendan Gleeson), becoming a public defense attorney, while Samantha fled to New York, where she works as a patent lawyer. However, another devastating act of violence brings Samantha back to Pikeville, where the sisters have to reckon with both their traumatic past and tumultuous present.

Can The Good Daughter Live Up To Will Trent?

Almost as soon as it premiered, critics praised Will Trent as a top-tier procedural, gritty enough to stand out but with enough humor to keep the story palatable. As a miniseries, The Good Daughter will never be a steady workhorse like Will Trent, but it could make a bigger pop culture splash.

The Good Daughter is a prestige series in every sense of the word. Airing on a streaming service means the show isn’t beholden to broadcast rules and can be darker and more mature without worrying about broad audience appeal. Miniseries also have an advantage in attracting A-list talent, as in-demand actors are much more likely to take on short-term TV commitments than long-running series. With Rose Byrne, Meghann Fahy, and Brendan Gleeson, The Good Daughter is a prime example.

The new Peacock show also has prestige talent behind the camera, as The Good Daughter is directed by the Emmy-nominated Steph Green (Watchmen) and written by Karin Slaughter herself. It’s often a good sign when authors write their own adaptations, ensuring that what ends up on screen is as close to their vision as possible.

Though not as big as Netflix, Peacock is slowly building a reputation for must-watch series, and The Good Daughter is poised to keep that trend going. Last year, the streamer released the thriller miniseries adaptation All Her Fault to rave reviews and massive viewership numbers. The fact that The Good Daughter is getting similar release treatment — a November premiere with all episodes dropping at once —is incredibly promising. Whether or not it overtakes Will Trent will be revealed this November.
