The first 56 episodes of Prime Video’s two-show fantasy franchise have already managed to encapsulate the appeal of Dungeons & Dragons better than any official adaptation of the iconic tabletop board game franchise. Any list of the most influential shows of the 21st century would be incomplete without HBO’s iconic adaptation of author George RR. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire saga, Game of Thrones.

While the later seasons of Game of Thrones might not have lived up to the show’s full potential, at the height of its popularity, the series managed to make unapologetically R-rated, gory, explicit fantasy shows into a mainstream phenomenon. Before Game of Thrones, even family-friendly fantasy shows struggled to last more than a few seasons. After Game of Thrones, everything from Netflix’s The Witcher and the League of Legends show Arcane to AMC’s Interview with the Vampire began setting budget records for streaming services and cable networks.

Not only was the first Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, one of the biggest TV shows ever made, but even its astronomical budget was dwarfed by 2022’s Lord of the Rings prequel The Rings of Power. Game of Thrones made fantasy a mainstream phenomenon on the small screen, and one Prime Video franchise used this to launch not one, but two of the best shows in the genre’s history. Since then, the Critical Role series The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein have arguably outdone even Game of Thrones itself.

Vox Machina & The Mighty Nein Perfectly Capture The Spirit Of Fantasy Adventure

Keyleth reaches out a glowing hand in The Legend of Vox Machina

Based on the popular actual play podcast of the same name, the first Critical Role show The Legend of Vox Machina follows the mismatched band of adventurers Grog, Pike, Percy, Scanlan, Vax, and Keyleth as they attempt to avenge a massacre in the town of Whitestone. As The Legend of Vox Machina’s four-season story continues, the show’s world grows gradually bigger, but never loses its focus on the central ragtag band of antiheroes.

From the aforementioned Rings of Power to the Robert Jordan adaptation The Wheel of Time, many expensive, ambitious fantasy shows that followed in the wake of Game of Thrones tried to replicate the show’s sprawling, polyphonic approach to storytelling. This made sense, since earlier critical hits like The Wire and The Expanse had already popularized this writing style, and it was a big part of the HBO hit’s immersive appeal.

However, even though the universe of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise is infamously massive, The Legend of Vox Machina ironically succeeded by taking the exact opposite approach. The show’s story is comparatively self-contained, which allows viewers to get to truly know the main characters and the stakes of the story instead of getting lost amid dozens of main characters.

Critical Role Is Beating Bigger Fantasy Shows At Their Own Game

While Netflix’s upcoming live-action Dungeons & Dragons show sounds exciting, it is undeniable that Critical Role’s first two fantasy shows have largely beaten the genre’s earlier series at their own game. The actual play podcast was originally both an affectionate parody of fantasy adventure stories and a killer fantasy story in its own right, not unlike The Princess Bride or Terry Pratchett’s novels.

Thus, it should not have come as a surprise when 2025’s The Mighty Nein brought a more cynical, darker edge to the world of The Legend of Vox Machina. Set 20 years after the original show’s events, this spinoff series is more morally ambiguous, but still retains the focused character work and compelling story telling viewers have come to expect from the franchise.

It is fair to say that the Critical Role shows are now outdoing their rival fantasy shows, with the franchise going from playfully mocking the fantasy genre to creating some of its best new series. Amid a slew of new Dungeons & Dragons projects, the Critical Role shows The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein have set the bar extremely high.
