An Iconic Mario Story From 38 Years Ago May Be Crucial To The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has confirmed that an iconic storyline will somehow find its way to the big screen. The trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie revealed additional details regarding Mario and Luigi’s next adventure, which will see the pair join forces with one of Mario’s most famous allies – Yoshi.

There’s been a great deal of speculation about the role to be played by Yoshi, who was teased in The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s post-credits scene. It was assumed, of course, that after hatching, he’d be given his traditional role, which is that of a mount and companion for Mario.

Interestingly, the movie may be doing even more with the character, as it ends with a moment that draws inspiration from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, a game that once seemed disconnected from what the movie was doing.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Teasing A Yoshi’s Island Story

The end of the trailer features a Tyrannosaurus Rex chasing a rifle-holding Yoshi, accompanied by Baby Luigi, Baby Mario, and Toad. It’s a clear callback to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, a game that explored Mario’s history with Yoshi. Set in the past, it centered on Yoshi as its main character, whose job was to protect an infant Mario.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island is remembered as the game that elevated Yoshi into a significant player in the franchise, setting the stage for him to acquire his own series of games. With that in mind, there was always good reason to suspect that this story would get referenced in some capacity, but Mario and Luigi’s appearances here are indicative of something even bigger.

What The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Baby Mario & Luigi Reveal Means For The Story

Since Toad is also present, the scene is highly unlikely to be a flashback. Rather, it may be that one of the movie’s villains – possibly Bowser Jr. – has temporarily reverted Mario and Luigi into children. Such a twist would allow The Super Mario Galaxy to incorporate Super Mario World: Yoshi’s Island into its narrative in a way that prevents it from dominating the film.

Going in this direction could be exciting for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and for more than just the purpose of nostalgia. Just as it was with Yoshi Island, it would lend Yoshi an opportunity to take a step up from being a sidekick and acting as a more of a guardian to Mario and Luigi, and at least for a portion of the movie, the hero of the story.
