Best Starting Job For Your Protagonist

Picking a first job for your protagonist in Octopath Traveler 0 can be tough, as there are several options to pick from, and they all offer different pros and cons to your party composition. The new entry in Square Enix’s RPG series is about to be released and will offer a new take on the franchise while retaining the central aspects of its gameplay. There are new features in Octopath Traveler 0 that aren’t present in the previous core games.

For example, you can create a custom character as your lead protagonist, who is then joined by other pre-made playable characters as you progress through the story. This can lead to an issue with the story of Octopath Traveler 0, depending on your perspective. The game also features a life-sim aspect to it, as you rebuild the town that was burnt down by the main villains.

Octopath Traveler 0 Has 8 Starting Jobs

You Can Unlock All Jobs For The Protagonist Over Time

One of the first choices you’ll need to make when starting the game is determining what the first job your protagonist will have. In total, there are eight different job choices to pick from, based on the jobs of the previous games. They are: Warrior, Thief, Cleric, Scholar, Merchant, Hunter, Dancer, and Apothecary. This is a critical choice at the start of Octopath Traveler 0.

At first, you can only pick one of these eight jobs, which will determine how you play during the first portion of the game. Your protagonist can unlock all eight jobs over time, but it requires a lot of progress through the game. You can unlock a new job once you unlock a certain number of Skills within the job you already have. The third job can be unlocked after unlocking Skills from your second job and so forth.

You Should Pick Warrior As Your First Job In Octopath Traveler 0

From all of the available options, I believe Warrior is one of the best choices as your first job in Octopath Traveler 0. Warriors tend to be DPS units with tank capabilities, and that is fitting for your early-game team combinations. As a Warrior, you’ll have a well-rounded main character. Furthermore, the majority of the early-game enemies are weak to Sword damage, so having that promptly available from the get-go is a great way to exploit weaknesses and beat enemies.

After your protagonist, whom you control all the time, Stia is the first character to join your party. Stia is an Architect, a brand-new job in the game, and she can be seen as a support who is capable of healing the party – which already makes it possible for the protagonist to lean away from a healing job like Cleric. Soon after, you unlock Phenn, a Hunter, so you can discard that job from the protagonist’s initial options.

This was already made clear with the Octopath Traveler 0 demo. Of course, you can also lean toward a Thief, who uses Swords and Daggers and is a DPS unit on the field, though you’ll unlock a Thief ally called Celsus early on in the game, too, so that would make you double down on Thieves.

Still, during the early-game portion, you’ll unlock Viator, a Warrior. However, having a duo of tanks and DPS can help with BP management and make your protagonist truly feel like the main character in Octopath Traveler 0, so Warrior is the best option for your first job.
