With Border 2 gearing up for its theatrical release, screenwriter Sumit Arora has opened up about the creative process behind the much-anticipated patriotic drama and the weight of carrying forward a cult legacy. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Arora described writing as an ever-evolving journey rather than a fixed destination.
“A script is a constantly living thing till the scene is shot,” Arora said, explaining that even after months of writing, the work continues to grow and adapt during filming. He revealed that he and co-writer Anurag spent nearly six to eight months developing the screenplay and dialogues. However, the story kept evolving on set.
Revisiting Border was central to his approach. He recalled that he watched the movie as a child in Meerut.  Tapping into that memory helped him reconnect with the emotion audiences associate with the original. The biggest challenge, he admitted, was living up to the expectations of viewers who still hold the 1997 classic close to their hearts.

Arora also spoke about writing for Sunny Deol, whose screen presence has defined some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic moments. Knowing that his lines would be delivered by Deol added both pressure and privilege to the task. According to Arora, Sunny Deol brings a natural gravitas to every dialogue, elevating even the simplest lines through his voice, presence and conviction.

Balancing nostalgia with freshness, Border 2 aims to honour the spirit of the original while presenting a story that resonates with today’s audience. With Sunny Deol at its core and Arora’s writing shaping its emotional backbone, the film seeks to revisit the power of patriotism, memory and cinematic legacy.
