Brad Pitt’s 10/10 Sci-Fi Action Hit Still Deserves A Sequel

Brad Pitt’s fantastic sci-fi action movie deserves to have a sequel 13 years after it was released. Pitt’s movies include several sci-fi roles, from his small but memorable role in 12 Monkeys opposite Bruce Willis, to his introspective space adventure Ad Astra. However, there’s one sci-fi film in his career that deserves to have the sequel it set up.

Why World War Z Remains Popular

In 2013, Pitt starred in an adaptation of World War Z, loosely based on the novel of the same name by Max Brooks. The movie follows Pitt as UN investigator Gerry Lane, who is roped into trying to find a cure for a worldwide zombie outbreak. This involves an action-packed, globe-trotting adventure as he tries to save the world.

The movie has maintained popularity over the years: at present, it’s the Number 7 movie worldwide on Paramount+. The movie presents fast-moving zombies that pose a major threat to the world, including a multitude of infamous scenes, such as zombies piling atop one another to get over a wall, that have become staples of the genre.

World War Z Deserves A Sequel

World War Z ended with Gerry making progress on a zombie cure, potentially allowing humanity to become immune and undetectable to the undead. The movie was also a critical and commercial success, earning a 72% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and bringing in $540 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $190-269 million.

A sequel to World War Z feels necessary given the number of loose ends the movie leaves off with. While a vaccine appears within humanity’s reach, the movie doesn’t specify whether the world is able to recover and go back to normal. A follow-up film would be able to explore these ideas in detail, justifying another chapter in its post-apocalyptic world.

Will World War Z 2 Ever Happen?

World War Z 2 was officially announced in June 2013, just one month after the movie came out. However, in 2019, it was cancelled by Paramount due to budget problems, alongside potential inability to release the film in China. This makes it unlikely the movie is ever going to be made, as Paramount has no guarantee for its financial success.

Even so, the Pitt-led action film deserves to have some form of follow-up, despite the sequel’s cancellation seven years ago. Its continued streaming popularity, strong reviews, and solid box office performance makes it a worthwhile film to deliver a powerful sequel to. Even though one isn’t planned as of writing, World War Z deserves to have its story continue.
