CBFC Sends Vijay’s Jana Nayagan To Revising Committee Days Before Planned Release

Just when the countdown had begun for what is being positioned as Vijay’s last film before his political foray, Jana Nayagan has run into an unexpected hurdle. The Central Board of Film Certification has informed the Madras High Court that the film will now be screened by a newly appointed revising committee, throwing its January 9 release plan into doubt.

    A release date under threat

The development came during the hearing of a petition filed by the film’s production house KVN Productions, seeking an urgent direction to fast track the certification process. The bench headed by Justice PT Asha was told that the film, which was submitted for certification on December 18, 2025, had initially been communicated a conditional clearance.

Producer Venkata K Narayana submitted to the court that the CBFC Regional Office had informed him that Jana Nayagan would be granted a ‘UA’ certificate provided certain excisions and modifications were made. According to him, the team accepted the instructions, carried out the required changes and resubmitted the revised version on December 24. However, he said that there was no further response from the CBFC after the resubmission.

The lack of clarity over the status of the certificate and the sudden decision to send the film to a revising committee prompted the producers to move court. In response, the High Court directed the CBFC to produce the complaints or objections that led to the film being referred to a revising panel. The matter has been adjourned to Wednesday, making the next hearing crucial for the film’s immediate future.

    Vijay’s political farewell faces turbulence

For fans, Jana Nayagan is not just another Vijay release. It is being promoted as his final outing before he plunges fully into active politics ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. That emotional and symbolic weight has amplified the anxiety around the delay.

The film marks the first collaboration between Vijay and director H Vinoth, a filmmaker known for mixing social commentary with commercial grammar. Industry watchers have been closely tracking Jana Nayagan ever since its announcement, with its trailer recently becoming one of the most viewed in Tamil cinema history across multiple languages. Against that backdrop, any uncertainty over certification has an outsized ripple effect on distributors, exhibitors and fans who have already begun planning for opening day shows.

The ensemble cast only adds to the sense of occasion. Jana Nayagan brings together Vijay with a formidable supporting lineup that includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mamitha Baiju and Narain. It also reunites the star with several familiar collaborators. He returns to the screen with Prakash Raj after Varisu, with Pooja Hegde after Beast, and with Gautham Vasudev Menon after Leo.

On the technical front, the film is backed by an experienced crew. Anirudh has composed the music, Sathyan Sooryan has handled the cinematography, Pradeep E Ragav is in charge of editing, while Anl Arasu has choreographed the action sequences and Selva Kumar has overseen the art direction.

Jana Nayagan is also a pan Indian bet for KVN Productions, with simultaneous dubbed versions lined up in Hindi and Telugu under the titles Jan Neta and Jana Nayakudu respectively. With advance promotions already in motion, any further delay in certification could upset a tightly packed release calendar across states.

For now, all eyes are on the CBFC’s next submission to the court and the outcome of Wednesday’s hearing. Whether Jana Nayagan can still meet its January 9 target or will be forced to rethink its release strategy is a question that will likely be answered in the coming days.
