The fan campaign to get DC to restore the Snyderverse has taken a blow after a new studio update, as the situation around Netflix getting the rights to the comic book franchise just got harder. Since Zack Snyder’s latest DC movie, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, was released on HBO Max in 2021, fans have been asking for the franchise to come back.
Given Snyder’s busy release slate on Netflix, the streaming service became the fans’ dream home for Snyder’s planned Justice League sequels, as well as any possible future movies set within the Snyderverse. However, Netflix does not hold the rights to DC characters, which could change if the streamer bought Warner Bros. Discovery, but that sale has become more complicated.
3 Studios Will Bid For Warner, But Only Netflix Makes Sense For The Snyderverse
Despite some vague comments from executives and contradicting reports at first, Netflix is firmly interested in buying Warner for its huge IP library, which would grant the studio DC’s characters and the ability to restore the Snyderverse. However, Netflix is not alone in that process. Three studios are expected to present bids to buy Warner, with Netflix joined by Paramount and Comcast.
Of the three studios, the only one that would really make sense for the Snyderverse’s return is Netflix. After all, DC has since moved on from the franchise. James Gunn’s DC Universe had a hit movie in the form of David Corenswet’s Superman, and both Paramount and Comcast have no ties to Snyder to risk resurrecting the divisive Snyderverse.
Given that Netflix expressed an interest in licensing Snyder’s DC movies in the past, with the fact that the studio did not hold the rights to DC characters blocking a full-on Snyderverse return at the time, Netflix emerges as the most viable home for the shared universe if it were to return after Warner Bros. Discovery is sold.
A Major Warner Bros. Discovery Sale Update Might Mean Bad News For DC Snyderverse Return Chances
What plays against Netflix’s chances of buying Warner, and thus the door being opened to the return of DC’s Snyderverse, is that another studio seems to have become the frontrunner. Recently, Variety reported that Paramount was building a $71 billion bid to buy Warner alongside Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the Qatar Investment Authority, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.
While Paramount has since denied that it is partnering with the aforementioned entities, a recent report from Reuters claims Paramount Skydance is the frontrunner in the race to buy Warner Bros. Discovery. Could the Snyderverse be restored if a studio other than Netflix buys Warner? It is hard to believe, and so Paramount, as the top contender, diminishes DC Snyderverse return chances.
