All signs point to Stranger Things officially ending on December 31st, leaving a hole in Netflix’s catalog. While scans will undoubtedly be busy scouring the internet for a replacement, it’s equally certain that Netflix will be on the hunt for a series that can match Stranger Things’ unique energy.
Comic fans, however, have had access to the best Stranger Things replacement for 7 years. While it might be different in many ways, Image Comics’ Die comic has all the out-there ideas and Dungeons & Dragons-inspired action that fans have come to expect from Stranger Things.
Die Is The Dungeons & Dragons-Inspired Series Stranger Things Fans Need
Beginning in 2018 as a comic from Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans, Die is a dark fantasy series that takes inspiration from the failed 1983 Dungeons & Dragons animated series.
The comic follows a group of friends who, after venturing into a world of fantasy inspired by their role-playing game when they were young, find themselves directionless in middle age. Unsatisfied with the fact that they left one of their friends behind in the fantasy world, the group meets up and is eventually pulled back into the titular world of Die.
Die Takes Stranger Things’ Themes About Dungeons and Dragons Even Further
Much like Stranger Things, Die wears its Dungeons & Dragons inspiration on its sleeve, though the comic series takes things a bit farther by having the characters literally sucked into the world of their roleplaying game.
More than just being literally about a role-playing game, though, Die’s themes are deeply tied to the genre.
Each of the main characters in Die has a class that is a little deeper and more interesting than the standard ones featured in Dungeons & Dragons. Instead of a paladin, Die‘s cast includes the Grief-Knight, a warrior who grows in strength the sadder he gets.
Instead of a cleric or traditional wizard, Die has the God-Binder, a spell-caster who makes bargains with a pantheon of gods in exchange for limited-time boons.
It’s all a fascinating twist on the classic Dungeons & Dragons formula that will undoubtedly appeal to fans intrigued by the role-playing aspect of Stranger Things.
Currently, Die doesn’t have a live-action adaptation in development. So if Netflix is looking for its Stranger Things replacement, Image Comics’ Die is a good place to start.
