While Dragon Ball has never been a particularly complex story with many hidden secrets, there is one mystery the franchise has consistently avoided exploring. What exactly happened to the Frieza Clan? The race appears to be nearly extinct with only Frieza, King Cold, and Cooler being the only known members. This naturally raises the question: who was powerful enough to wipe out the rest of their species?
Many fans believe Beerus is the culprit, but the anime would have revealed that during the Golden Frieza Saga. So, who was it? Although the anime never provides a clear answer, Dragon Ball Super quietly offered fans a major hint that most viewers happened to overlook.
And if we were to connect the dots with some of the details revealed in the original manga, everything seems to fall right into place. As such, there is a really strong possibility that the one responsible for destroying the Frieza Clan may have been none other than Dragon Ball Z’s final villain, Majin Buu.
Dragon Ball Super Quietly Teased Who Destroyed the Frieza Clan
While Dragon Ball Super provided the subtle clue about the Frieza Clan’s fate, its roots were planted long before in the original manga. In Dragon Ball Chapter 445, while the Supreme Kai and the Z fighters were tracking Spopovich and Yamu to Majin Buu’s location, Shin took the opportunity to explain Majin Buu’s backstory.
According to Shin, when Majin Buu first appeared, he had wiped out several hundred planets in just a few years. In this panel, the manga showed one of the planets that Majin Buu had wiped out. Amidst the rubble, the illustrations showed corpses of a race of beings that looked very similar to Frieza’s first form. This sparked the theory that it was perhaps Majin Buu who took out the Frieza Clan.
The manga never confirmed this, but Dragon Ball Super later reinforced the idea when Frieza revealed his father’s warning. King Cold had asked him to not mess with two entities: the God of Destruction Beerus and Majin Buu.
Since Beerus had once asked Frieza to eliminate the Saiyans, it makes sense that the Frieza Clan knew about the God of Destruction. However, that isn’t the case for Majin Buu.
According to Shin, Majin Buu’s infamous rampage took place millions of years ago. Hence, there should have been no way for the Frieza Clan to know about him unless their race had directly encountered him in the past or passed down knowledge about him to the future generations.
Toriyama’s Use of Frieza as a Powerscaling Benchmark Supports the Theory
Although Akira Toriyama never directly confirmed that Majin Buu wiped out the Frieza Clan, the original creator may have indirectly supported the above theory during the Majin Buu Saga itself. When Shin explained Majin Buu’s history, he mentioned that the Five Kaioshins back then were strong enough to destroy Frieza with a single blast.
Akira Toriyama was clearly using Frieza as a powerscaling benchmark to show fans how terrifying Majin Buu was. Yet, it also confirms that the original creator had Frieza in his mind while ideating Majin Buu’s lore. This connection strengthens the idea that Majin Buu could have been the one responsible for the Frieza Clan’s near extinction.
Unfortunately, with Akira Toriyama having passed away, fans can only hope that Toyotaro confirms this theory. That said, it is highly unlikely that the Dragon Ball Super creator would meddle with Toriyama’s work to that extent.
