Elisabeth Moss leaves The Handmaid’s Tale behind as she takes on a new role in the trailer for Apple TV’s Imperfect Women.
After playing June Osborne throughout the six-season run of The Handmaid’s Tale and winning multiple Emmy Awards for her performance, Moss is now starring in and executive producing Apple TV’s new psychological mystery thriller. She is joined by Kerry Washington and Kate Mara, with the trio of actors cast as three longtime friends – Mary, Eleanor, and Nancy –whose relationships are shattered after a crime and the investigation that follows. The story is based on the Imperfect Women novel by Araminta Hall, which was published in 2020.
Now, Apple TV has released the first Imperfect Women trailer. It begins with Nancy narrating while making a toast to her two close friends and referring to them as the people she loves most in the world. As the narration continues, Nancy’s heartfelt speech and the friends’ smiles are juxtaposed with glimpses of illicit romance and explosive anger, which ultimately leads to Mary and Eleanor hearing that a body has been found. As noted at the end of the trailer, Imperfect Women makes its Apple TV debut on March 18. The two-episode premiere will be followed by individual episodes being released weekly every Wednesday through April 29. The star-studded cast surrounding Moss, Washington, and Mara features Joel Kinnaman, Corey Stoll, Leslie Odom Jr., Audrey Zahn, Jill Wagner, Rome Flynn, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Violette Linnz, Indiana Elle, Jackson Kelly, Keith Carradine, Ana Ortiz, and Wilson Bethel.
The adaptation is created by Annie Weisman, who serves as the showrunner. Her previous showrunner credits include Apple TV’s Physical starring Rose Byrne and Peacock’s Based on a True Story starring Kaley Cuoco. Weisman is also an executive producer alongside Hall, Moss, Washington, Lindsey McManus, Kay Olegun, and Lesli Linka Glatter. Olegun is the show’s writer and Glatter directs episodes 1, 4, and 5.
While Moss is coming off of her final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, Washington’s 2025 projects include Shadow Force and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, while Mara starred in A24’s Friendship and Prime Video’s Invincible. From The Handmaid’s Tale to Little Fires Everywhere, both of which are Hulu originals, Moss and Washington have had success with television shows that adapt novels. Imperfect Women has the potential to continue this, especially with its parallels to HBO’s hit adaptation of Big Little Lies.
