Everybody Loves Raymond Will Never Be Rebooted

Everybody Loves Raymond was a fixture on the CBS primetime schedule from 1996 to 2005, winning 15 Emmys during its run. But star Ray Romano promises that despite the show’s past success, no one should anticipate a reboot or revival — now or ever.

During the recent Everybody Loves Raymond: 30th Anniversary Reunion special, Romano said, “Let’s get one thing out of the way — this is a reunion.”

“Not a reboot,” co-creator Phil Rosenthal added.

The reason, Romano and Rosenthal explained, was that while cast members Patricia Heaton, Brad Garrett, Monica Horan, and Sullivan Sweeten were able to join them for the reunion special that night, three had previously passed away: Peter Boyle, Doris Roberts, and Sawyer Sweeten (the latter playing one of Raymond’s sons).

Said Romano during the special: “We’re never going to do [a reboot], because we’re missing three cast members, three family members. We’d never try to do the show without them.”

“It wouldn’t be the same,” Rosenthal agreed. “We have too much respect for the show itself and for the beautiful audience. … And thankfully, the show is still on every day, all over the world.”

All nine seasons of Everybody Loves Raymond are in fact streaming on both Peacock and Paramount+. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of other TV from that era getting revivals: Prime Video just announced plans to bring back the Stargate franchise, and the return of ABC’s Scrubs just got a new teaser trailer.
