Fate Of The Old Republic Release Date Is A Long Way Off

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was arguably the biggest reveal from The Game Awards 2025, but it may be a long time before we’re actually able to play it. Taking place in the beloved version of the galaxy far, far away first established by Knights of the Old Republic in 2003, Fate of the Old Republic is helmed by the same director, Casey Hudson.

In the official reveal from Star Wars, Hudson and Lucasfilm Games vice president and general manager Douglas Reilly were interviewed about the project, which seems to only be taking off. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is “still in the early stages of development and creation,” meaning its release is likely years away. The game is being developed by Hudson’s Arcanaut Studios, which he co-founded earlier in 2025.

Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic Does Not Yet Have A Release Window

FOTOR, as it will undoubtedly come to be called, was officially announced with a trailer at The Game Awards, but was notably lacking in any sort of release window. The trailer itself ends with a disclaimer: “Cinematic scenes captured in Unreal Engine 5.” Accompanying clarification that Fate of the Old Republic is “in development for PC and consoles” also points to a potentially very distant release; PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were not mentioned.

With Arcanaut Studios being founded only this year, “early stages” may be an understatement for Fate of the Old Republic‘s current development status. “We’re still early in development, with many challenges ahead,” says Hudson. It is similarly quite telling that the interview – and the trailer – offer practically no insight into FOTOR‘s story. All we know is that it “is not a direct sequel or continuation” of previous Old Republic games.

Star Wars: FOTOR Is A “Choice-Driven” RPG

With Hudson at the wheel and Fate of the Old Republic‘s title invoking the cadence of its KOTOR predecessors, it’s really no surprise that the upcoming game is an RPG. Following his work on the original Knights of the Old Republic, Hudson directed the original, equally beloved Mass Effect trilogy.

Reilly calls FOTOR “deep, cinematic, [and] choice-driven,” with Hudson mirroring that sentiment by saying the “definitive Star Wars experience” will use “state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion […] that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

Excitement is already mounting for Fate of the Old Republic, but it’s likely to be a long time before we even see gameplay, let alone its full release. KOTOR fans have already been burned in recent years by the development troubles of the KOTOR remake, which was canceled at Aspyr and moved to Saber Interactive, but has yet to resurface.

Arcanaut Studios is untested, despite Casey being a prominent developer, and two decades of expectations following KOTOR‘s enshrinement among the RPG genre’s best now weigh on this new project. We’re finally getting another single-player RPG in the Old Republic, but we may be waiting a while to actually play Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
