General Hospital has revealed who shot Drew Cain, and the actor behind the incident is now speaking out. Cameron Mathison has been playing Drew on the long-running soap opera General Hospital since 2021 and starred on All My Children before that, so he has plenty of experience with shocking and death-defying storylines, including Drew being shot twice in the back.
The shooter’s identity has been a mystery for several months, but General Hospital just revealed during the episode that aired on January 8 that the person who pulled the trigger was none other than Drew’s wife, Willow Cain. During an interview with TV Insider, actress Katelyn MacMullen, who plays Willow, opened up about the jaw-dropping revelation.
It wasn’t just the fans who were left in the dark; the cast was as well. In fact, MacMullen only found out that Willow was the shooter a week and a half before filming the flashback scenes that were woven into the trial.
The actress admitted she was “surprised” but also found the experience “exciting,” especially since the episode pulled back the curtain on what led to Willow shooting Drew. The cast had their own theories in recent months and were speculating nonstop, just like the fans were.
“I found out about a week and a half before we shot the flashback scenes. On one hand, I was a little surprised. On the other, we were all so curious, as a cast, as to who did it, so it was kind of exciting to know that it was Willow and to then be able to figure out why she did it.”
During that period of time when MacMullen and her co-stars didn’t know the truth, the actress had her suspicions about Willow, so she was able to “play around in that gray area” and deliver a performance in which viewers were left wondering what secrets she wasn’t sharing with everyone.
“Up until that point, I suspected that it could have been Willow, but I didn’t know for sure. So, it was kind of fun to play around in that gray area of, ‘Did she do it? Did she not do it?’ and to work in a way where it could be her, but it also couldn’t be her. And then once I knew that she was the shooter, it was more like, ‘OK, now she’s kind of fighting for her life here.’”
Speaking of that gray area, Willow shooting Drew has been a great opportunity for MacMullen to show different sides of her character and her own acting abilities, especially since she really hasn’t gotten the chance to do something this shocking on General Hospital before.
What makes a lot of characters on soap operas so compelling is the moral ambiguity, which Willow has now displayed. “I’ve gotten to see that ebb and flow with her of experiencing the highs and now the absolute lows of her life,” MacMullen said.
“I feel like in life, people go through these ebbs and flows of being the hero of their own story or maybe the villain. And I think the beautiful part of playing a role for, now going on eight years, is that I’ve gotten to see that ebb and flow with her of experiencing the highs and now the absolute lows of her life. Living through all these things that have brought out the worst or the best in her has been, on one hand, challenging, but also a cool gift of working in this particular genre where you’re playing the character for so long.”
In a way, it was almost too obvious that the shooter would turn out to be Willow, which is what makes this revelation fascinating since the show could easily have gone in a completely different direction to keep everyone on edge and unsure of what’s coming next.
As MacMullen explained, “Usually, there might be someone who comes out of left field…but for them to confirm that it was, in fact, one of their prime suspects…it was really interesting.“
“Usually, there might be someone who comes out of left field, and everyone’s like, ‘Oh, I never thought of that.’ But for them to confirm that it was, in fact, one of their prime suspects, and the way they did it, was really interesting.”
As far as the crime itself, MacMullen feels like Willow “had no choice” but to shoot Drew, since she had been in a “place of psychological distress” after losing her kids in the custody battle.
Drew’s actions weren’t helping the situation at all. Willow realized that he was “isolating her and keeping her in a position of powerlessness” as a way to control her. Attempting to get rid of Drew was Willow’s way of taking back control of her life and reuniting with her kids.
“From my perspective, she felt like she had no choice. I think she’s been in a place of psychological distress, and she doesn’t quite know who to trust. She’s been backed into a corner of, ‘You must do this to get your kids back,’ but then that didn’t work, and then it was, ‘You have to do this to get your kids back,’ but that didn’t work either.”
Despite the storyline being shocking and filled with plenty of drama, various cast members on General Hospital have taken it upon themselves to find humor in the situation. As MacMullen explained, “There’s definitely some new, I don’t want to say nicknames, but people are like, ‘What’s up, Killer?’“
“There’s definitely some new, I don’t want to say nicknames, but people are like, ‘What’s up, Killer?’ But it’s all in good fun, to keep things light. I love that there are so many tentacles to this story. I think we’re all quite intrigued by it. It’s been quite fun to just chat about and joke about and then experience because we’re all in it together and we’re like, ‘Dang, this is a crazy fun time.’”
“She’s shocked and determined. There was so much pent-up anger, and it’s finally come out. The cool thing about this story is that it’s gone in so many different directions, and the possibilities are endless, and I’m excited to see where it goes.”
As for what the future holds for the characters on General Hospital, especially Willow after everyone discovered her secret, MacMullen added that the “possibilities are endless.” She’s a fan just as much as the viewers are, and she can’t wait to see what happens next.
