Marvel is set to kick off a brand-new Iron Man series in 2026, featuring way more than just upgraded armor. In a shift that will redefine Tony Stark in some pretty exciting ways, writer Joshua Williamson is hopping over from DC with artist Carmen Carnero to provide a story that will highlight Tony Stark’s true weapon.
Rather than focusing solely on armor (though there will be a really cool new upgraded suit), this new Iron Man series is set to shift the focus to Tony Stark himself and his massive potential for both creation and destruction.
Iron Man’s Getting A Brand-New Series In 2026
At New York Comic Con 2025, Marvel announced a brand-new Iron Man series set to release in January 2026 under Williamson and Carnero. Here’s the synopsis for the first issue:
The unapologetic Iron Man is a once-in-a-lifetime hero – but the beating heart behind the armor is a once-in-a-century genius. Years ago, Tony Stark was knocking on death’s door, so he created the Iron Man armor to survive! What happens the next time death comes calling? What weapon does he create then? What if…someone else creates it first? These questions have haunted Tony for years, a ticking time bomb inside of him waiting to explode. Femme fatale Madame Masque has also asked these questions, and with the power of Advanced Idea Mechanics behind her…she’s ready to create the next great weapon.
Essentially, it seems as though the main thrust of this new series is that Tony Stark’s mind is one of the most dangerous weapons in the Marvel Universe, something Williamson very much confirmed in a recent interview.
Tony Stark’s Brain Is His True Weapon, Not His Armor
As Williamson shared in his interview with IGN, “I wanted the story to not be about the Iron Man armor but about Tony. Before Tony became Iron Man he was a selfish and ego driven person who used his genius for destructive gains. I’ve always wondered what role would someone like Tony have played if he never had his near-death experience in the bunker?“
There’s plenty of excitement to go around with this new series, from Iron Man’s brand-new Mark 75 armor designs that were also recently revealed, to Williamson’s teasing Norman Osborn’s involvement, and perhaps even some appearances from Spider-Man.
However, it looks as though the big thing to get hyped about is “The Mind of Stark” as the true weapon. Likewise, it’s going to be fascinating to see what happens in this upcoming series based on the aforementioned teases that AIM is looking to make their very own Tony Stark with help from Madame Masque.
All things considered, it does seem like we may be headed for a confrontation where Iron Man will be forced to try and out-think himself.
Iron Man #1 releases January 28th, 2026 from Marvel Comics.
