The Supreme Court of India has recently asked Karisma Kapoor to respond to Priya Kapur’s plea requesting certified copies of records related to her divorce from the late Sunjay Kapur. Karisma has termed the plea “frivolous” and described it as an attempt to obtain her personal information.
The plea was taken up by a Supreme Court bench, where Karisma Kapoor’s counsel firmly opposed it. As per ANI, the application was termed “frivolous” and an effort to access personal and confidential details. The court directed Karisma to submit her objections on record and granted her two weeks to file a comprehensive response.
In fact, Mandhira Kapur Smith, Sunjay’s sister, has also called Priya’s request of accessing the divorce papers “unnecessary and misplaced.” Mandhira further added, “If my brother wanted to share these documents, he would have done so when they were married. I don’t understand why this is being pursued now.” Mandhira also noted that the matter is sensitive and needs to be treated as such, especially as children are involved.
In her application, Priya also stated that she is Sunjay’s legally wedded wife. Therefore, a lawful heir to his estate. She moved the court seeking certified copies of records related to Transfer Petition (Civil) No. 214 of 2016, filed during Sunjay’s divorce from Karisma Kapoor. According to the plea, these documents are required for ongoing succession proceedings before the Delhi High Court.
According to Priya’s application, the transfer petition filed by Sunjay in 2016 had sought to move the divorce proceedings from the Mumbai Family Court to Delhi. The former couple later reached an amicable settlement, following which the Supreme Court disposed of the petition on April 8, 2016. The court placed detailed consent terms on record. After Sunjay’s passing on June 12, 2025, Priya’s counsel stated that she has a legitimate interest in her husband’s estate and related legal matters following their marriage on April 3, 2017.
Sunjay was earlier married to Nandita Mahtani between 1996 and 2000. He tied the knot with Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple had two children, Samaira and Kiaan. Following a prolonged legal battle, Sunjay and Karisma were granted a divorce in 2016. He later married Priya in 2017 and they have a son named Azarius.
