In 2025, Kim Gordon reworked her single “Bye Bye” into an indictment against the Trump administration. Now she’s back with a new solo album that similarly takes aim at politicians and the billionaire class; Play Me is out March 13 via Matador. Musically, Gordon is less steely than usual on its lead single, “Not Today,” in which she breaks out her singing voice for the first time in years. Check out that track along with its music video below.

Rodarte founders Kate and Laura Mulleavy directed the “Not Today” clip and pulled out a custom-made tulle dress that they designed for Gordon years back, bringing out both her edge and femininity. In the video, Gordon shoots hoops, dances freely, and swings her guitar around in circles, mirroring her unexpected freedom in the recording studio. “I started singing in a way I hadn’t sung in a long time,” said Gordon. “This other voice came out.”

Play Me is Gordon’s third solo album, following 2024’s The Collective, and includes one guest feature: Dave Grohl drumming on “Busy Bee.” Gordon has a renewed creativity across the LP that she partially credits to reuniting with producer Justin Raisen. “We wanted the songs to be short,” said Gordon. “We wanted to do it really fast. It’s more focused, and maybe more confident. I always kind of work off of rhythms, and I knew I wanted it to be even more beat-oriented than the last one. Justin really gets my voice and my lyrics and he understands how I work—that came forth even more on this record.”

Read about The Collective at No. 10 on “The 50 Best Albums of 2024.”
